iTunes Review

It’s reasonable to argue that Otis Redding was the greatest soul singer ever and this compilation, which collects a formidable string of hits, could serve as proof. Redding, who died at the age of 26 in a plane crash, continually developed his craft throughout his tragically short career. “These Arms of Mine,” from 1962, nicely captures his early style; just two years later, his sound had modernized into something more hard-hitting, as evidenced on the stone-cold classic, “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” And you can’t go wrong with “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” the original of “Respect,” the fiery “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” and his no-nonsense version of “Satisfaction.” In 1966, Redding put out the amazing “Try a Little Tenderness,” and the next year he released a fun-loving cover of Sam Cooke’s “Shake.” To top things off, he recorded the mysteriously reflective “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” just days before he died. Redding had great musicians behind him, and it should be noted that he had a hand in penning ten of these songs. The Very Best of, indeed.

OTIS - THE MAN

If this album doesn’t make your eyes water, you are dead. Nobody make you feel the pain of love and heartbreak like OTIS - THE MAN. I especially love My Lover’s Prayer. I am surprised it is not more popular. Of course, These Arms Of Mine, Pain In My Heart, Try A Little Tenderness, so many good songs on this album. The whole thing is worth getting. Enjoy

Yes!

The sh*t. Buy it. He's the bomb. The original meaning of R&B!

Otis Redding

Another Otis greatest hits collection but a good one. Fantastic album from beginning to end. I especially always like to hear "I can't turn you loose" as it reminds me of the Blues Brothers.

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s

One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern "deep soul" — hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. He was also the most consistent exponent of the Stax sound, cutting his records at the Memphis label/studios that did much to update R&B into modern soul. His death at the age of 26 was tragic not just because he seemed on the verge of breaking through...
