iTunes Review
A protégé of Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Filter’s Richard Patrick delivered the corrosive guitar-led, electronically enhanced hit single “Hey Man Nice Shot” that perfectly reflected the growing industrialization of mainstream rock music in the mid-‘90s. Initially just Patrick and programmer Brian Liesegang, Filter expanded into a revolving line-up of musicians dedicated to bringing the noise to the live stage. This 14-song retrospective offers a varied assortment of textures and approaches. The band’s collaboration with the Crystal Method for “(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do,” featured on Spawn: the Album, works off the their tougher electronic edge, while the radio edit of their hit single “Take a Picture” and the single edit of “Where Do We Go From Here” represent the group’s lesser-acknowledged pop instincts, and “The Only Way (Is the Wrong Way)” further pursues Patrick’s reflective moments. Very Best… includes loose tracks that appeared in soundtracks such as “Jurrasitol” from The Crow: City of Angels and two tunes (Three Dog Night’s “One,” “Thanks Bro”) recorded for two different X-Files albums.

Again with the album only songs!?!?
I gave this album two stars because its has at least a few of the hits. It's missing a bunch of The Amalgamut songs that were really great: American Cliche among others. What is really wrong with this album, at least the way iTunes is choosing to sell the album, is that two songs are Album Only. For one "Soldiers of Misfortune" appears on another album, and you can get it as a single song. Secondly, "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" is only available in iTunes on this one album. Seeing as I already have most of these songs in my library, it seems a bit ridiculous to pay $9.99 plus tax for that one song. iTunes just likes to use the popularity of one song and its scarcity to make more money. It's just unfair and crooked. All songs should be sold as individual items. And who knows they might just make more money that way.
A little taste of one of the best band's on the planet...
Filter is the brain child of musical genius Richard Patrick. After his tenure as the original guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, he left silently in the night to create the 1995 Industrial-Grunge-Rock masterpiece that is "Short Bus". It launched Richard to stardom with the classic song "Hey Man, Nice Shot", that song along with another excellent cut off that album, "Dose", are included here. Between that album and the next, Filter contributed to four film soundtracks. Contributions included a rousing cover of Harry Nillson's "One" and a reworking of The Crystal Method's "Trip Like I Do". They form a nice bridging EP that gives way to 1999's Industrial-Pop album, Title of Record. Arguably their most popular album, it is well represented here with several track including the mega-hit, "Take a Picture". Their 3rd album, The Amalgamut, embraced a more mainstream and darker sound, but surprisingly, the lighter (and better) songs are included on this compilation, "Where Do We Go From Here" and "The Only Way", both received considerable mainstream exposure through radio and TV/Film. After a stint with Army of Anyone, Richard returned with 2008's epic and underrated sonic masterpiece, Anthems for the Damned, seeing as it is the most recent offering, it appropriately is only represented by the lead single "Soldiers of Misfortune", a song dedicated to a fallen fan and to all the troops serving in the Middle East. The Very Best Things does indeed contain many of The Very Best Things from Filter's large catalog, but it should not be viewed as the be-all-end-all. If you like what you hear, you should strongly consider purchasing any of their other 4 albums, as they all achieve perfection in their own right. Highly Recommended.
