Customer Reviews
Booker T. White was one of the real great bluesmen.
Booker T. White (called "Bukka" because of the label of an early single) was one of the great Mississippi bluesmen. Like Leadbelly, he was first recorded by the Folkways recording program while he was in prison. Also like Leadbelly, he has a rocksteady rhythmic guitar style, which he modifies by singing old "field holler" style over it. You can hear the sound of a train in many of his songs. Unlike Leadbelly, he went on to popularity when he was rediscovered by John Fahey in the 1960s. He is one of the top bluesmen because of his distinctive style and, to modern ears, his rhythmic and aggressive style still seems relevant.
A great recording by an unknown (to me at least)
I'd never even heard of Bukka White until I stumbled upon this on itunes. Being vintage recording the sound quality varies somewhat. Be that it as it may the music is consistently good . This is largely blues/folk in the Leadbelly/Woody Guthrie tradition. The obscurity of this album is undeserved, you'll enjoy!
Helped teach the King
This is BB King's cousin. BB lived with him in Memphis for a short time in 1946. This is the man that taught BB what the blues was all about, with out Bukka, there would be no BB King.
