Album Review
On this, their third full-length and most widely distributed domestic release, Violet Burning expanded their sound to an almost epic alternative scope with sweeping soundscapes and intensely personal lyrics. Joining band leader, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Michael Pritzl on this 1996 self-titled Domo Records release are guitarist Jef Schroeder, drummers Jeremy Wood and Lonny Tubbs, and bassist Jason Pickersgill. The most common comparisons of Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead are certainly in order, as Violet Burning reaches for a dramatic, expansive pitch throughout its 12-song tracklist. Besides the more obvious influences, strains of the Flaming Lips and even Neil Young can be heard, especially on Pritzl's vocal work in track like "Arabic Tremolo Radio" and "Blind." The sublime aching for spiritual release is quite palpable on these tracks and other standouts like the live favorite "Low" and the expansive "Waiting." Superior to previous releases, Violet Burning represents an leap in aural and musical abilities for Pritzl and company.

There is an indication of a swear word in the liner notes for "Fever." (I believe it was a trail of asteriks?) The truth is that at the point in which Michael was to voice this "cuss word," there is a crash of feedback that completely obliterates ANY ability to hear the cuss word. In fact, it could be debated that he never actually recorded the cuss word. If this is such a stumbling block for you, perhaps this is not your kind of music. To me... yes, a Christian, Mr. Pritzl is of only a small few who can vocalize the human condition of being a Believer in this world of ours. There are (as I see it) testimonies of true love (both between lovers and between "man" and Our Lord), lyrics of loss, and even words of searching to find that place in this world that we live in. I'm truly sorry for those of Faith who don't see the beauty and HONESTY in this amazing album. Certainly one of my favorites of all time.
"Fever" has the F-bomb
Although this album is great musically (hence the 5 stars), Christian fans should be warned that "Fever" has the f word in it. (where's the explicit label iTunes?). When I found this out, I was very disappointed with the band. I've heard all the oh-so enlightened arguments about how this shouldn't be an issue, but it is. When Peter denied Jesus, what did he do to convince people that he didn't know him? He began to "curse and to swear, saying I know not the man." Matthew 26:74 I'm not saying that the band is denying Jesus. I'm saying that there are words that Christians should avoid.
Sit back and enjoy... wait a minute... get up, move around & enjoy
For those of you who do not know of the Violet Burning, this album is a great one to get started with. Arabic TR, Goldmine, Underwater... these are some of the best in a very large & valuable VB library of unique, creative and smashing tunes. Long a favorite of Christian Alternative fans, the VB is regarded by most music fans as one of the best alternative bands to come out of the last 25 years. I am excited to see more of their albums on i-Tunes (even if Apple is greedy & money hungry), and I think you will come back wanting more. The only thing that tops their albums is seeing their shows. Awesome.
