Album Review
The Voice was a milestone in jazz history; it was the first time a jazz singer had recorded an entire album solo, without accompaniment or overdubbing, for a major label. Bobby McFerrin's amazing ability to switch back and forth between bass notes and falsetto, along with his talent for jumping octaves, made this record quite a virtuoso showcase. For those interested in the potential of the human voices and in an important jazz talent, The Voice is recommended without reservations.
Customer Reviews
In the Beginning....
This album was the spring board to the success of McFerrin's career. The live performance song Blackbird showcases McFerrin's vocal range and dexterity even to this day. Although not noted here, this album was McFerrin's first commerical success and was originially released in the early to mid '80's. It is the defining album of his early career which is defined by solo performances without overdubbing or accompaniment.
Awesome only hints
at the complexity of this album. As a young college music student Bobby's song " I'm my own walkman" opened my ears to endless possibilities of improvisation. Thanks for releasing a digital version of this album. My vinyl has long since been played out.
The Title Says It All
This is the album that brought McFerrin to the attention of the music world -- all solo vocals with no overdubs, truly astounding.
