Album Review
When Israeli singer Chava Alberstein produced a documentary film on 20th-century Yiddish poets in 1995 (Too Early to Be Quiet, Too Late to Sing), the writers' stories provoked Alberstein to set some of their poems to music. The results are gathered on The Well, with vocals by Alberstein and music performed by the Klezmatics. The compositions reflect Alberstein's wide range of influences, from klezmer and traditional Jewish music to French chanson, German cabaret, American folk, and Middle Eastern styles all popping up.

Tears of Joy
This collaboration between Israeli singer Chava Alberstein and New York Klezmer innovators, the Kelzmatics, is one of the the most beautiful and soulful collections of songs of the Jewish Diaspora. At turns joyous and mournful, this labor of love finds a meeting of minds and chops in the poetry and music of pre-Holocaust shtetl culture. Not a mere exercise in nostalgia, this holds forth as a masterful exploration of what emotions still take hold of the human heart through the cycle of life. L'chaim!
