Album Review

Power metal will probably never regain the level of visibility it enjoyed during the '80s heyday of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but there is still plenty of power metal being recorded in the 21st century; one just has to know where to find it. And German headbanger Tobias Sammet has been doing his part to keep '70s/'80s-style power metal alive — not only as the frontman for Edguy, but also with Avantasia, the side project he started in 1999. The Wicked Symphony comes 11 years after Sammet founded Avantasia, but there are no attempts to sound modern by 21st century standards. Oblivious to punk-influenced styles like alternative metal, death metal, black metal, metalcore, and rap-metal, this 2010 release underscores Avantasia's firm commitment to power metal as it sounded 25 years earlier. The Wicked Symphony is metal neo-classicism in action, which means an epic approach that enthusiastically recalls a time when Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, and Queensrÿche were fixtures on MTV. And why shouldn't metal have its neo-classicists? Jazz has Young Lions who emulate the hard bop improvisers of the '50s and '60s; folk has college-age singers whose musical blueprint is Joan Baez or Judy Collins circa 1964. There's no reason why metal shouldn't celebrate its past as well, and Avantasia does exactly that on epic offerings such as "Blizzard on a Broken Mirror," "Dying for an Angel," "Black Wings," and "Scales of Justice" — all of which keep Sammet firmly planted in his ‘80s-obsessed comfort zone. Few surprises occur on The Wicked Symphony, but if Sammet is fairly predictable, he is also pleasingly consistent — and this is an easy album to enjoy if one is in the mood for a staunchly neo-classicist approach to metal.

Fantastic Duo

I became a fan of Avantasia after their 2008 release, "The Scarecrow", a few months ago.
When I heard that there was going to be not one, but TWO Avantasia albums being released, I couldn't help myself but just shout with excitement.

First off, Avantasia is a unique band that to me sounds like a kind of Christmas metal only they can define. The style Tobias Sammet puts into the music is very addicting at key points.
Second, Tobias Sammet has very well outdone himself with these two releases, "The Wicked Symphony" and "Angels of Babylon". Personally, I thought because it was a two album release, there wouldn't be so much effort to put these albums together.

I couldn't be more wrong.

Both albums are a must buy for Avantasia fans all around. Although I personally seem to favour "The Wicked Symphony" more than "Angels of Babylon", no doubt some, if not most or all, of the songs on both of their albums are must haves.

Highly recommended to symphonic metal fans, Avantasia/Edguy fans, or just something new you want to try.
Although, this kind of music is definitely not for the hardcore/brutal/death/black/or whatever thrash metal preferred. Give it a preview before you buy, but I definitely would recommend both albums.

EPIC, OBVIOUSLY!!!!

I had no idea they would release 2 albums 2 follow up the epic story of the scarecrow. But any song that has Russell allen, jorn lande, and Tobias sammet all together has me sold, so I'm hopelessly hooked on the epic title track. And Tons of other great vocalist are in this 2. Now one thing I recommend is if your listening one time through, skip Runaway Train and then play it at the end, becuase it's defienlty a much better ending then middle, I thought it's so stupidly placed. Anyway, aside from it's one flaw, This is a great take on Heavy metal (specifically bonjovi) but also includes tons of symphonic power metal. I defiently like this a lot better than angel of babylon, but both are great albums.

One word "Wicked"

I'm very picky about the music listen too, so when I heard these guys perform, I knew they were truly great. This is the first album I've bought sine I bought the "Blues Brothers" 5 years ago. So trust this picky music listener, give them a try! I love it!

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Avantasia was an all-star side project headed by Tobias Sammet, lead singer of the prog-tinged German power metal band Edguy. While recording a guest appearance from Blind Guardian singer Hansi Kursch with his regular band, Sammet conceived of a massive-scale rock opera featuring the cream of the current power metal scene. He spent a year composing the material, named the "band" Avantasia, and recruited a variety of vocalists to tell his story: Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen, Stratovarius' Timo Tolkki, Virgin...
