Album Review

Composer Danny Elfman’s fittingly taut score for director Joe Johnston’s 2010 rendering of the iconic tale of the Wolfman conjures up images of wet, foggy, Victorian streets littered with all manner of Dickens-spawned villainy. Elfman, no stranger to the shadow worlds of horror and fantasy, may be a little bit on autopilot here, but there are enough genuine, Edward Scissorhands/Sleepy Hollow-inspired moments, where surprisingly memorable melody breaks through the graveyard dirt into the moonlit night, that there’s no denying that the listener is truly in the presence of a master audio storyteller.

Great Classic Elfman

The music is vintage Elfman very much in the same style of Sleepy Hollow! The Producers made the right choice putting Elfman's music back in the film.

Strangely familiar, but still...

I have to agree with fsg's review in that I was immediately struck by the echoes the opening of The Wolfman has to Kilar's score for the 1992 Dracula film; however, I must say, I still really like this score. A lot. Very heavy in strings and has a strong, thick, murky ambience. Appropriate given the film's subject matter and setting -- and I can imagine it must play beautifully with the film itself (which I have not seen). As far as Elfman's catalogue goes, no -- this isn't the best, or even at the top of the list. But it's far from being a disappointment. It's really quite beautiful and well worth the listen -- If, of course, you're not too freaked out by the almost-uncomfortable similarities to Kilar's score nearly eighteen years ago (which I also recommend highly).

Definitely Not His Best

I really like Danny and I have most of his work. But honestly, after I purchased this score, I was a little disappointed when I realized right from the start that parts of it sound much too similar to Wojciech Kilar's score for Bram Stoker's Dracula. All in all it's pretty a good score, but it's far from his best IMO.
