Album Review

Following the disappointing commercial performance of the dance-oriented Hot Space in 1982, Queen took 1983 off to get refocused and work on a follow-up that would put the band back on track. While the songwriting had definitely improved on the resulting The Works in 1984, the album sonically lacked the punch of such earlier releases as News of the World and The Game (strangely, Hot Space even had a better overall sound). Although the album only peaked at number 23 on the U.S. album charts, it was a Top Ten hit in just about every other area of the world, producing the huge single "Radio Ga Ga." Three other tracks were hits in Queen's native England — the uplifting "I Want to Break Free," the love song "It's a Hard Life," and the politically conscious rocker "Hammer to Fall," which dealt with the danger of nuclear weapons. Other highlights included the '50s-sounding "Man on the Prowl," the electronic experiment "Machines," the thunderous "Tear It Up," and a touching acoustic ballad, "Is This the World We Created...?" Perhaps with a more straight-ahead production (and a U.S. tour), The Works would have landed Queen back on the top of the charts stateside.

This album truly has the works. It has almost any style of music. This album probably has the most riviting lyrics and has great music for everyone.

Downward Creative Slide During the Mid 80’s on Display

by MMckennzie

There other 80’s albums that are worse (Flash Gordon, Hot Space and Magic). However, this shows a creative slide that didn’t end until the release of The Miracle in 1989. However, there are a few gems. A special note about the “bonus” tracks. I Go Crazy shows why it was left on the cutting room floor the first time around. Radio Ga Ga (Extended Version) seems like someone had a little too much fun with audio. What a disaster. Ditto for Break Free extended.

Radio Ga Ga – 8 of 10 Stars - One of the few classics during the 80’s
Tear It Up – 5 of 10 Stars - Ok song, but no means harkens back to the hard rock classics
It’s a Hard Life – 5 of 10 Stars - A classic example of the lack of balance Queen had in the 80’s. Not a terrible song, but way too over the top.
Man on the Prowl – 1 of 10 Stars - I’m on the prowl for a good Queen song and this isn’t it
Machines (Back to Humans) – 4 of 10 Stars - This is entertaining to listen too
I Want to Break Free – 4 of 10 Stars - This might be the song that put the nail in the coffin for Queen in America. The USA was not ready for an already flamboyant lead singer in drag with a mustache. Sad, but the video did not help. The song itself is average
Keep Passing the Open Windows – 1 of 10 Stars - The band spent countless seconds writing this one. I keep passing this track on my iPod
Hammer to Fall -8 of 10 Stars - Out of nowhere they slip a classic on the album. Very good song. WARNING: This is not the radio edit and has an extended jam session in the middle. If you want the radio friendly version, go to Classic Queen
Is This the World We Created – 6 of 10 Stars - Very strong ending. This is a simple little song that works

awesome

Great comeback from Hot Space, albeit it started their 80s pop transformation (bleh, but at least this is the best of it).

Speaking of Hot Space - why is that pulled from iTunes.

Also Is This the World We Created - I must say I think this track is worthless compared to the live version - better recorded and performed LIVE.

Biography

Formed: 1971 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's...
