iTunes Review
Daptone Records' mission statement makes a pretty hard claim: “To bring you the tastiest, most delectable nuggets of soul, funk, gospel, and Afrobeat to be found on a vinyl platter.” But this incredible collection makes good on that goal—it’s impossible to play The World of Daptone Records without feeling the itch to get up and dance. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings’ “Got a Thing on My Mind” from their 2002 debut album kicks off the party with some seriously hard soul-funk rhythms that groove and strut while Jones sings like a cooler-tempered Marva Whitney rolling with The JB’s in 1969. Sugarman Three follow this up with a funk-whipped instrumental of near-Meters proportions with their “Funky So-And-So” (dig that airtight drum solo). “Thunder Chicken” by Mighty Imperials works in the mysterious bygone funk where it’s difficult to understand how something played so tight and on-lock could possibly sound so loose and juicy. El Rego’s mid-'60s cut “Hessa” is a standout jam that infuses hard-driving Afrobeat rhumba with tinges of American-inspired funk.
