Album Review

For album number nine, Wretched Spawn, Cannibal Corpse continue on with much the same style of gore-themed death metal that had made them a mainstay of the stateside scene for a decade-and-a-half. Bassist Alex Webster and guitarist Jack Owen write most of the songs here, respectively, and those songs are pretty much what you've come to expect from Cannibal Corpse by this point — musically pulverizing and lyrically unsettling. Vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher is as unrelenting as usual, especially on such songs as "Frantic Disembowelment," where he switches from growling to screaming with seeming ease. Wretched Spawn is overall a pretty brief album, clocking in just under 45 minutes, as few of the 13 songs break the four-minute mark. The title track is an exception, as are the lumbering "Festering in the Crypt" and the thrashing album-closer, "They Deserve to Die" — these three longer songs being some of the more interesting ones here, given their unique characteristics. Most of the others are rather straight-ahead death metal blasts, and while they're on the mark stylistically, they may seem a bit workmanlike to longtime fans who have heard all this before. And that's perhaps the one lurking problem with Wretched Spawn — it sounds great and is everything you'd expect it to be, but it's nothing new for this veteran band, who long ago perfected their death metal attack. If you're perfectly fine with the status quo, or are perhaps new to Cannibal Corpse, you'll surely find much delight here; however, if you're looking for something beyond another run-of-the-mill album from the band, you'll probably want to pass this one over. Unlike more memorable albums such as Tomb of the Mutilated (1992) and Bleeding (1994) where the band took its music to another level, Wretched Spawn is simply Cannibal Corpse continuing on with their trademark mayhem, seemingly confined by or content with their own musical boundaries, for better or worse. [Wretched Spawn is accompanied by a making-of DVD.]

Don't review without knowlege

First, I would like to address the strieu of negative reviews of this album that don't really cover the music. Just because you don't like it, don't say it's "not music". That is ignorant, and ignorance is one of the world's biggest problems. Please don't say this music doesn't require talent, because Cannibal Corpse and all of Death Metal is a very hard genre to play. You say the singer has no talent? George Fisher's growls are not easy to do, my friend, and at the speeds he does it are even harder. I urge you, DO NOT REVIEW A PRODUCT IF YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEGE. If you do not listen to Death Metal or Cannibal Corpse, then you have no business reviewing this. A review should be written by those who are able to analyze the product and compare it to alike works. If you completely hate the genre, you are biased and therefore should not review, because biased reviews are useless. About the album- This is one of the better CC albums I have heard. They have some interesting riffs, the tightness of such great speeds is jaw dropping, and again, the shock value of the lyrics is priceless. This isnt a straight through speed-fest either, some parts slow down quite a bit and build a really kind of neat groove. Fishers lyrics are rather impressive and all the songs have a nice catch to them that make it a fun listen. THis album is highly recommeded FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY DEATH METAL AND CANNIBAL CORPSE. If you prefer different stuff, that's cool, but for christ's sake, don't review this. NOTE: I do not get offended by negative reviews for things. It's the reviews that are negative for ignorance, arrogance and lack of knowlege.

Great Album!

I wasn't a fan of cannibal corpse until this album was released, I really love the sheer power behind the music and vocals, great stuff to workout too. My favorite song on this album is "They Deserve to Die". I really love how he goes from really low growling vocals up to the midrange in a matter of a second, great stuff and great power, keep up the good work! can't wait for the next album, I hope its as good as this! Anonymous - you are just jealous of these guys jenious (and listen to decency defied, you can understand most of the words in that song, or at least I can) and trust me, i know metal.

But wait a second...

When does George Fisher ever talk about worshipping satan?

"If vomit were a movie, this would be the soundtrack," wrote one critic of Cannibal Corpse's music, some of the most extreme, violent death metal sounds and subject matter ever committed to tape. Reveling in splatter-horror imagery in their often indecipherable lyrics, the group's graphic album artwork and song titles like "Meat Hook S****y," "Entrails Ripped from a Virgin's C**t," "F****d with a Knife," and so on, have — not surprisingly — attracted a fair amount of controversy and sometimes...
