Album Review

The album that first gave shape to the established Yes sound, build around science-fiction concepts, folk melodies, and soaring organ, guitar, and vocal showpieces. "Your Move" actually made the U.S. charts as a single, and "Starship Trooper," "Perpetual Change," and "Yours Is No Disgrace" became much-loved parts of the band's concert repertory for many tours to come. Remastered in 1995, with significantly improved sound.

american pants

I was 11 when this came out and I remember buying the album at “american pants” clothing store in philadelphia and I think I paid the same price then $5.94 as I did today. I got home and burned vinyl ’till I knew every word. This was the new sound of the day as rock went in another direction.

great album, make sure you buy this version rather than the one with the last track being played live. Although the live version is great the studio version has some awsome effects and plus this version costs 3 bucks less than the other one.

If you're looking for an intro to Yes...

...this is definitely the album to get.* As one of the reviewers notes, the lyrics were sung more for the sound of the words ("euphony") than their intrinsic meaning, they don't matter much anyway. It's the brilliance, virtuoso playing of just about everyone in the band. Jon Anderson's vocals are the only element that isn't A+ (B+ would be more like it). If you're only going to own only one "old" Yes album (before the jarring, without warning shift to more "accessible" "radio-friendly" material in the classic 90125 album), this is the one. But make sure to buy either this one or the EXTRA TRACKS versions. Skip the "parial album". It excludes the excellent "Starship Trooper"--a sort of precursor to their later behemoths such as "Tales From Topographic Oceans" (et al). "The Clap" is a killer acoustic surprise to be found in the middle of one of the first bands to immerse its sounds in the very latest technology, a trend that would continue until the band faded to has been status with "Big Generator." Though more often mentioned--these days--as inspiration for Rush's three side-long pieces ("The Fountain of Lamneth," "2112" and "Hemispheres"), such a comparison is unfair to both bands. Neil Peart's lyrics are always to the point, conveying either a story or a message, not the hodge-podge of stoner non-sense that so many Yes lyrics are. And while Peart, Lee and Lifeson are heads above any member of the revolving door line-up of Yes, that's not exactly a fair comparison either. Yes wasn't so much a "Prog" Rock band as a Symphonic Rock band and, thus, have more in common--at least in their aesthetic--with Emerson, Lake and Palmer than Rush. *(Though I admit my first Yes album--yep, vinyl!--was the three--record "Yessongs" live package; anyone remember Columbia House record "club"? I thought it was a best of compilation. Once you've developed a taste for Yes, the "Yessongs" is a Musthave. I'd love to here the digitally remastered version, the vinyl edition on my dinky little turn-table--my speakers cost more than my system!--sounded excellent enough; cleared of all of vinyl's infinite faults, I'm sure it sparkles.)

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Where rivals such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer withered away commercially after the mid-'70s, and Genesis...
