It's no coincidence that the cover of Thees Uhlmann's first (untitled) solo album evokes Springsteen's classic Born in the USA artwork, since the record finds the Tomte singer moving away from the indie rock style of his main band and instead packaging the songs in an Americana-inspired pop sound. Produced by Tobias Kuhn, the album features organ, piano, slide guitars and even a harmonica, while retaining Uhlmann's idiosyncratic lyrics and stories, such as the prosaic description of his hometown in "Lat: 53.7 Lon: 9.11667" or the observation of a salesgirl's monotonous life in "Das Mädchen von Kasse 2".

Best known as the lead singer of Hamburg indie pop outfit Tomte, Thees Uhlmann went on to take advantage of the band's late-2000s break to launch an equally successful solo career. Born in Henmoor, Lower Saxony in 1974, he studied politics and English at university while simultaneously fronting Tomte, who went on to release five albums between 1998 and 2008 before taking a self-imposed hiatus.
