iTunes Review

What is it that has made Their Greatest Hits outsell by millions of copies masterpieces like Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Les Zeppelin’s IV, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall? One might argue that these 10 songs have been successful among each successive generation for the same reasons they were successful when the Eagles first appeared in the early ‘70s. Following the implosion of the counterculture dream in the late ‘60s, America longed for sunshine and comfort. Their Greatest Hits documents the Eagles in its earliest incarnation, with founding members Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, and with Meisner and Leadon the group crystallized a sound of soft California breezes and carefree living, epitomized by “Take It Easy,” “Tequila Sunrise,” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” These songs have endured because they are solidly written, but also because there is no music that better sells the fantasy of a golden lifestyle in sunny Southern California.

A worthy spot for the best selling album ever

I've never really been that into The Eagles. But either way, aside from my own personal feelings, these songs are pretty damn good. They do an interesting job of fusing a lot of classic Southern California genres such as hippie style, country, blues, and classic rock. It escapes what I feel a lot of artists that flirt with country music do which is basically write completely monotone songs. They have some great guitar workouts and lyrics that remind you of The Beach Boys. So, its good that we get a good album to be the best seller. But, to the dude who said the RIAA fixed this to make sure black musicians couldn't be at #1, lay off the conspiracies. The reason this sold so well is because it packages all the hit songs from an extremely popular band. Thriller is incredibly huge, but many people can figure to just by the singles rather than the album. This album has all the singles, so of course people will get all rolled into one package. And as for Purple Rain, I love the album, but I think Prince's craze to protect his music by banning it from websites is what stopped it from selling more than it could. People couldn't hear the music after the 80's that way, that's why modern listeners don't know Prince very well. Sad but true.

It's not that the Eagles aren't one of the most important and influential American groups in history, it's the fact that a system specifically targeted them to "outsell" Thriller. The album "sold" by RIAA standards more than 12 million in the first four years? Went from one million in 76 to 12 million in 90? If that audit wasn't questionable enough, it then sold another 17 million by 2006 to beat Thriller. All this is happening while Purple Rain has stalled at 13 million since 1984? Really? Racism is alive and well, whether in your face or not.

Ya!

The Eagles are cool. My favorites are Desperado, Take it Easy, and Tequila Sunrise.
