Album Review

On Thelema, the Murder City Devils render their distinctive brand of hardcore garage punk with confidence and coherence. The ensemble playing is tight and economic as bassist Derek Fudesco and the menacing double-guitar brigade of Nate Manny and Dan Gallucci crank out unison rhythms that are bridged by Lesie Hardy's sustained keyboard textures and drummer Coady Willis' clever use of dynamics. "Bear Away" and "Bride of the Elephant Man" are the two most melodic offerings, as each instrumentalist contributes pop hooks that are infectious and harmonically intriguing. Vocalist Spencer Moody's constant screaming wears thin in a hurry, but his attempt to actually sing on the verses of "364 Days," a jangly mid-tempo folk-rock composition that yearns for the blessing of St. Nicholas with weeping violins and an old-world accordion accompaniment, is the band's finest moment. Despite the album's short running time, the Murder City Devils cover a lot of ground on this outing.

Satanic Elvis drunk on whiskey??? Or Not!

From the first spikey guitar notes of Bear Away you get the feeling that something dreadfully wonderful is coming to get you, and boy does it!!! The band opens up with all it's fury, drums, bass, guitars, and the creepiest sounding organs in a long time. It unleashes a rock and roll song on you that grabs you, picks you up, and drops you on your head, and leaves you wanting more! "The Vesta is landing!" If you aren't into loud, drunken, half sung, half slurred, creepy sounding rock n roll then this isn't for you. The whole EP is over too soon so buy it all. If you're feeling evil and a little brave then put this on, light some candles, find a sacrifice and start the party!!!

Stray cats meet rob zombie in a blessed union

Listening to this ep makes me feel like I'm a 50's greaser reincarnated straight from the belly of the beast. Old school zuit suite sounds meets post-punk metal. I can only say bite down on something before you hit the play button on the pod.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The Murder City Devils are a Seattle-based punk band who like their music fierce, raw, and powerful, with a garage rock edge in the melodies and a muscular approach that recalls old-school punk favorites the Misfits and the Dead Boys, but with a dark edge that shakes off any accusations of hipster nostalgia-mongering. The Murder City Devils were formed in 1996 by vocalist Spencer Moody, guitarist Dann Gallucci, and bassist Derek Fudesco; all three had previously been members of Area 51, and when...
