iTunes Review
The Hoboken, New Jersey trio's tenth album unfolds slowly, rewarding patience and close listening with subtle textures, gentle harmonies, and a becalming mood. This is not the sound of a band playing to its familiar strengths; only the swirling "You Can Have It All" and Georgia Hubley's "Madeline" showcase Yo La Tengo's knack for catchy pop, and Ira Kaplan reins in his passion for skronk guitar everywhere except on "Cherry Chapstick." Mostly the songs glide on rich vocal harmonies, hum atop skittering percussion, or shimmer with trebly waves of synths. While much has been made of the album's lyrical content (it supposedly contained Ira and Georgia's most personal writing to date), the vocals function more often to color and shade the mood than to communicate literal meaning. (There are a few exceptions, most notably Kaplan's intimate talk-sing turn on "The Crying of Lot G.") Though listeners just discovering Yo La Tengo are advised to start elsewhere-Painful is a particularly sure bet-And Then Nothing is an accomplished work from a talented, veteran band not content to sit still.
Customer Reviews
You'll like these Mellow-deez
This was the first thing I ever heard by YLT. It's one of my favorites now. I think "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House" is the best track on the album. It's so laid back and beautiful - you wouldn't think it was a song about arson! "Last Days of Disco" and "Madeleine" are also great mellow songs. You couldn't get any mellower in fact. If you're a fan of YLT, you should also check out the band "Luna". Very similar, but maybe a bit more guitar.
Why not start here?
This is where I started and fell in love with YLT. It is very mellow and entrancing.
From Black to Blue
I would first like to label this as the greatest laid-back/lo-fi album ever made, and my favorite album of all time by any other artist.
I'll be honest, I didn't really like this album when I first bought it. The first track that popped out was "Our Way to Fall", then "Let's Save Tony Orlando's House". Then others started growing, like "You Can Have It All", "Saturday" and "From Black to Blue".
Then suddenly, something amazing happened. I realized that this entire album is absolutely brilliant.
This album has more playtime than any other album of mine. If you are looking for something laid-back, sad at times, and completely addicting: Look no further than "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out". This was the best purchase I ever made. I find something new every time I listen.
