iTunes Review

Despite the rather serious title, GRAMMY-winning India.Arie's follow-up to Testimony Vol.1 is just as soothing, with beachfront beats, gently plucked acoustic guitars, sympathetic strings, and weightless pianos alluding to a sweeter life than the one she often observes. Even a track such as "Ghetto," versed in life's travesties, still manages to keep its chin up with a benevolent groove that proves this young R&B star always puts the music first. A variety of guests add their own touches  — reggae artist Gramps Morgan on "Therapy," soul artist Musiq Soulchild on "Chocolate High," rapper MC Lyte on "Psalms 23" and African singer Dobet Gnahore on a cover of Sade's "Pearls" — but Arie is perfectly capable of handling things on her own. "He Heals Me" opens with a simple piano figure that leaves her plenty of room to weave an intricate melody. Still, Arie obviously enjoys the collaborative moments. Bluesman Keb' Mo' guests on the electric stomper "Better Way" and R&B stylist Terrell Carter adds his shadings to the more reflective "Yellow." They bring a sense of community and humility to her music that makes it quite inventive and endearing.

She could sing the alphabet and I'd love it!

India.Arie is one of the few artists who have an innate talent at bringing a level of passion, intellect and spirituality to their work. Beyond her ability to bring light to emotionally charged situations, she adds an incredible depth on a lyrical and song structure methodology. It's always a joy to hear her new work and I'm definitely a life-long fan.

She did it again!

Finally, finally and finally :(( India.Arie's here!!!

What can I say? 2 years has passed since her first testimony was released and right here, right now, I'm given the chance to listen to her new music. I haven't heard more than 3 songs on this album but I am definitely going to give this album 5 stars, India.Arie never disappoints.

Biography

Born: Denver, CO

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '00s

One of a handful of neo-classic soul artists to emerge following the late-'90s success of artists like D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, Atlanta's India.Arie stood poised at the beginning of 2001 to make a major impact. A studied songwriter and guitar player rooted in the R&B, soul, Motown, and blues of the past, but grounded in the post-hip-hop urban world of today, Arie's debut, Acoustic Soul, was...
