Album Review

The members of Vertical Horizon often cite James Taylor as a major influence on their music. Originally released in 1992, There and Back Again is folksier than their major-label breakthrough. It will be popular among fans of Train and Jackopierce, who contributed to 1995's Running on Ice, but may not appeal to those who like the harder-edged Everything You Want. There and Back Again is marked by vocal harmonies and melodic acoustic guitar. Standout tracks include "The Mountain Song" and "Willingly." An interesting look at Vertical Horizon's early roots, but it would be a mistake to expect that the band's best work would be on this early self-released album. Of interest mainly to die-hard completists. RCA released its version of the album in 1999.

Such a great simple album. Have been listening to this for years, and it is still an incredible listen. If nothing else, download "Liberty", one of the prettiest/saddest love songs ever.

Great album! This is VH's first album, when the band was just two guys, their guitars and vocals. There's neither a big and strong rhythm section, nor the huge overlapping vocal choruses commonly heard on their most recent albums ('Everything You Want' and 'Go'), still their wonderfully arranged voice harmonies and simple, yet beautifully composed, guitar parts make this a nice listening experience.

If you got here by listening to songs like 'Everything You Want', or 'Forever' and want more of that, go back and buy both Everything You Want and Go albums (you won't regret it). But if you are willing to give this band a try, or want something more on the lines of Jackopierce, Simon & Garfunkel and James Taylor, but more on the pop side, than definitely get this album! Also listen to 'Running On Ice', Vertical Horizon's best yet, in my opinion.

Launched in 1991 as a folk-based acoustic duo, Vertical Horizon gradually molded itself into a slick pop/rock outfit, culminating in the band's brief (but significant) heyday at the turn of the 21st century. Matt Scannell and Keith Kane first performed together at Georgetown University, where the two...
