iTunes Review

How does the goofy, spastic, almost-improvisational noise-rock duo Hella weather the change to a goofy, space-prog, almost-screamo quintet who write actual songs with vocals on every tune? To judge by their first album as a "real" band (and first for Mike Patton's Ipecac, as well) they've done quite well, thank you. They had already perfected spastic metal-noise and were never going to be as good as Lightning Bolt (who were there first anyway), so they had to try something new. Imagine a mellower and less serious Mars Volta collaborating with Ween, or the Blood Brothers on a Grateful Dead kick, or the Boredoms circa '90 crossed with the Boredoms circa '95. The Sacramento, California-based group's sense of humor doesn't end with the record's name; sample song titles include "The Ungrateful Dead," "The Things That People Do When They Think No One's Looking," and "Anarchists Just Wanna Have Fun." This is definitely a transitional album and as such, it's not perfect. But it's always an exciting ride; the only way to know what's going to happen next is to have already memorized it.

A new direction!

i did not expect to like this album when i heard hella, the band that i always thought of as that wild drum/guitar duo, got a whole band. Surprisingly though, Hella, although given a more prog edge, remains true to its avante-garde roots. the crazy time signature structuring you've come to expect if your a hella fan is there, but its brought more to life by the overtones that the additional instrumentalists add. If your new to Hella, you can expect immensly complex drum parts perfectly matched to weird guitar parts which seem to be playing 3 things at once. If you've heard em before, let me break down the changes. The whole mix of things is like old hella (oddball time sig's, virtual throwing out of scales in preference to interval shifting shapes) but mixed with a new melodic sense added by the strange vocals. It makes it sound a lot like a free-form later era King Crimson suddenly got smashing pumpkins/(dare i say) mars volta-ish vocals, (if you doubt the KC comparisons, when you hear the sax work on the first song you'll know what i mean. Do not expect a pop record, If you are a fan of only straight foreward music (not to say thats bad), and like your music to be emotionally driven instead of cerebral, i reccomend you stay FAR away from this band. However, if you enjoy the oddball antics and weird arrangements of bands like Lightning Bolt, Deerhoof, King Crimson, The Mars Volta, or ummm, older hella, i say go for it. if anything, you've probably never heard anything quite like this before. SPECIAL NOTE: metal drummers could take a note from the spastic melodic sense that zack hill puts out, he makes blast beats seem like childs play... 5/5

So good it hurts

This album will blow your mind! You have never in your life heard music like this. The drummer is amazing! The music is so frantic yet so musical. Go get this album.

When does the instrumental version come out?

Hella was amazing as a duo. The genius of Zach Hill and Spencer Seim should not be covered up by this whiny excuse for a singer.

Indie rockers Hella consist of guitarist Spencer Seim and drummer Zach Hill. The two first got together in the spring of 2001, developing a following around the Sacramento area that won them a record deal on 5 Rue Christine Records. Their debut LP, Hold Your Horse Is, appeared in 2002, and established Hella's chaotic approach to instrumental noise rock.
