Album Review
Having stayed out of the recording studio for four years prior to making his comeback album, 461 Ocean Boulevard, Eric Clapton returned to recording only a few months later to make its follow-up, There's One in Every Crowd. Perhaps be hadn't had time to write or gather sufficient material to make a similarly effective album, since the result is a scatter-shot mixture of styles, leading off with two gospel tunes, one a reggae version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." Clapton and his second guitarist, George Terry, had written a sequel to "I Shot The Sheriff," "Don't Blame Me," which Clapton sang in his best impersonation of Bob Marley's voice. The other originals included "Opposites," whose lyrics were just that — day, night, life, death, etc. The album's best track, naturally, was the blues cover, Clapton's take on Elmore James's "The Sky Is Crying." But There's One in Every Crowd was a disappointing follow-up to 461 Ocean Boulevard, and fans let Clapton know it: While the former album had topped the charts and gone gold, the latter didn't even make the Top 10.

One of my favorite Clapton albums
I enjoy most of Eric Claptons albums. As to whether this is a letdown after 461 Ocean Blvd is a matter of taste. I always have felt the Eric's best performances in the studio is when he was doing what he wanted to do. It is obvious to me that he is enjoying getting away from the "clapton is god" label and is playing music that moves him inside. An understated gem to be sure.....just listen to The Sky Is Crying and tell me that EC is not playing his heart out in the slow blues format of that song. Also Pretty Blue Eyes is genius in action also. Little Rachel....perfect. I believe this album is anapprecaited masterpiece. Gotta love the album cover as well.
not perfect but fun
I really enjoy this one and my kids 3 and 5 love it. it is there bedtime music along with Billie Holliday
An under-rated album
While not as good as 461 Ocean Blvd this follow-up still has plenty of charm. The Sky is Crying is a fantastic version of the Albert King song - done slow and mournful - a totally unique interpretation. Bettter Make It...is also a deeply felt and beautifully sung track. This whole album seems to go deeper and more personal than just about anything Clapton has ever done. Yeah, it's a little raw and occassionally a little too laid back, but it's also very pretty and unaffected in its approach. when you look at all the stuff he did afterwards, this will always seem like the most down to earth and real session of them all.
