Album Review

Although drummer Jay Lawrence is the leader of this trio date and bassist Lynn Seaton is excellent in support, Thermal Strut is a success primarily due to the playing of pianist Tamir Hendelman. A major pianist based in Los Angeles who works with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Hendelman is brilliant throughout the modern mainstream set, whether romping on "Topsy" and "Opus De Funk," or sounding impressionistic on "Almost Summer" and Lawrence's "Eulogy." Seaton and Lawrence both play well behind Hendelman, who is particularly expressive on Jimmy Rowles' "Peacocks." Recommended.

AMAZING!

This album is a fantastic combination of personel, compositions, and arrangements. Lawrence's touch, versatility, and swinging time feel is world class. Seaton is a powerhouse and Hendelman is one tasty piano player. This trio knocks me out and the tune choices are superb. Kudos also for the quality and balance of the recording. Anyone who likes in-the-pocket, classic jazz trios will love this project.

Like non other

Jay's songs have a rhythm that just keeps your foot tappin'!!!. The drumming is phemomenal. More jazz artists need to learn from Jay's trio. These guys need to make many more albums. Tons of people enjoy this AMAZING jazz music. This is one of the best jazz albums EVER!! The beat just inspires me to go make my own jazz album. MY top song on this album would probably be TOPSY. Be sure to check it out.

Inventive trio jazz

This is not run-of-the-mill jazz trio fare--you know, standards all the way, play the head, piano solo, bass solo, piano & bass trade fours with the drummer. The original title track features laid-back medium swing tastefully done, while 'Topsy' pushes up-tempo while swinging like mad. 'Love For Sale' is the most inventive take for my money, with Jay laying down a New Orleans "second line" drum groove that's infectious. 'You Can't Do That' features a funky shuffle and 'Agua de Beber' employs an effective bass line rhythmic offset to the familiar Jobim intro/interlude hook, creating a fresh version of this chestnut. Jay Lawrence is a talent deserving of wider recognition. Highly recommended!
