iTunes Review
Although serious crate-diggers probably own multiple vinyl versions of these songs, the good folks at Ubiquity Records have hunted deep within their vaults to compile a dozen gems that have been sampled by the likes of Beyoncé, Lupe Fiasco, Beck, Mobb Deep, J Dilla, and others. If the opening funk riff and barrage of breakbeats from Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers’ “Searching for Soul Pt. 1” ring a bell of familiarity, you might have heard it first in Beyoncé’s “Suga Mama.” The Propositions’ infectiously groovy “Africana” was similarly appropriated for the outro to “93 Til’ Infinity” by East Oakland’s Souls of Mischief. Eugene Blacknell turns up twice here. First is his rhythm-heavy, Hammond B3 organ–grinding “Gettin’ Down,” which many folks first heard in DJ Shadow’s “Influx." Then it’s his “We Know We Have To Live Together,” the rumbling rhythms of which were ingeniously looped through Beck’s “Black Tambourine.” DJ Shadow also mined Soft Touch's slow-burning “Plenty Action” for his “Monosylabik,” though he cleverly pitched it down and gave it a dubby stutter.
