Album Review
Thimar is a most impressive collaboration between Brahem, soprano saxophonist/bass clarinetist John Surman and double bassist Dave Holland which superbly fuses the traditions of jazz with those of Arab classical music, pushing the parameters of both while succumbing to the clichés of neither.
Customer Reviews
Thimar
This is a truly remarkable recording. Like others, I heard Mazad on XM Radio and was blown away. I hunted down the album and downloaded other Brahem music. So much of the music we hear today, even the good jazz, is familiar to us in its general use of instruments and musical patterns. Brahem's music, because it stems from the unfamiliar Arab musical tradition, is constantly surprising and delighting. The sax, clarinet and base remind us of our familiar western music but they take us to places we have never been -- exotic, playful, sometimes haunting and always magical places. Totally original and totally transporting.
Album should be under Anouar Brahem's name
This is a superb album that should be listed under the name of the composer, Anouar Brahem, not Dave Holland.
hunted this down
I heard the cut Mazad on radioparadise.com and went hunting for it, found it on this album. Mazad is a middle eastern version of Bolero, the tune we all know and love. Bolero is based on some Spanish country tunes, and Mazad blends Ravel with the feelings of the Moors, Alice Coltrane, Shankar and, interestingly, Artie Shaw? Anyway, a magical blend. I bought this album and some other work by Brahem.
