Album Review

The legend of Whitney Houston began with this self-titled album. It marked her shift away from the experimental songs she did with the group Material and a move into heavily produced, very slick urban contemporary and adult pop. Although Houston had learned her craft working in New York nightclubs and singing in a Baptist church in Newark, she was steered into radio-friendly ballads that emphasized style over substance. The album did yield an unprecedented string of number one hits, but "Saving All My Love for You" and "How Will I Know" created an impression of an incredibly talented vocalist using only a minimum of her skills. It also contained one of her few legitimate soul workouts in "The Greatest Love of All."

"Did you know that Whitney Houston's debut LP...

...called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that Christie? It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album."

This is the Whitney I want to remember

This is Whitney's best album by far. I bought this album when it came out, and I wore that cassette out! I was a huge fan until the diva syndrome and Bobby Brown entered her life. She was a huge talent and a great beauty, but it makes me sad that she just threw it all away. I had a glimmer of hope for her newest album (I Look to You), but after listening to the sample of the title track, I'll be saving my money on that one, downloading this album, and enjoying the beauty of Whitney's voice before she just spoiled it all.

Love it

An amazing first album...she's (still) amazing.

Whitney Houston is inarguably one of the of the biggest female pop stars of all time. Her accomplishments as a hitmaker are extraordinary; just to scratch the surface, she became the first artist ever to have seven consecutive singles hit number one, and her 1993 Dolly Parton cover "I Will Always Love You" became nothing less than the biggest hit single in rock history. Houston was able to handle big adult contemporary ballads, effervescent, stylish dance-pop, and slick urban contemporary soul with...
