Album Review
Third Eye Blind's eponymous debut is catchier than the average post-grunge album, and that fact alone reveals a lot about the band. Instead of relying on standard, plodding grunge influences, Third Eye Blind draw heavily from the simple hook-laden traditions of classic arena rock, which makes the album more immediate. Unfortunately, this also makes it a little simplistic — the group can craft a naggingly memorable hook, as evidenced by the single "Semi-Charmed Life," but they aren't always able to fashion them into songs. Still, Third Eye Blind is easy on the ears, and its straight-ahead professionalism makes it a pleasurable listen for post-grungers.
Customer Reviews
Guilty Pleasure Classic!
You don't let your hipster friends see you "doo doo doo" to Semi-Charmed Life or brush away the tear from your eye during The Background or put the moves on your girl to I Want You, but you like, no you love this album.... don't you?!? You hide the CD case behind your rack filled with Bright Eyes and Sufjan CD's but you listen to this one more often, right? It's a pop schlock classic and I don't even feel that guilty about loving it.
Definitive 90's rock
When most think of Third Eye Blind, the singles "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Jumper" first spring to mind. With this in mind it is understandable why the band is often considered to be no different countless other 90's pop/rock bands like Eve6, Nine Days, Filter, Tonic, etc. This is unfortunate because the meat of the album lies in tracks not many have heard like the incomparable "Motorcycle Drive-By." While their singles are rooted in the traditional pop hooks, the rest of the album gives the band a distinct sound and energy. The unique guitar tones coupled with a distorted bass line found on high-energy tracks like "Thanks a Lot," "Good For You," and "London" are different than any other band I've ever heard. The ablum is rounded out by the mellow ballads "I Want You," "The Background," and "God of Wine." I like the singles, but this album as a whole falls apart when even one track is missing. The first two tracks ("Losing a Whole Year" and "Narcolepsy") immediately grab your attention. The familiar singles follow, and the second half of the album is like one continuous song that starts slow and loud, speeds up to a climax, and then eases off at the end. If all you've heard from this are the singles, please check the rest of this album out. It is an out-and-out classic of 90's rock that has never found proper recognition because of the lack of audience for the non-singles.
One of the best albums you'll ever hear
I've listened to this album for about 10 years. It should go down as one of the best albums of all time. You can listen to every song on it.
