iTunes Review
Alkaline Trio’s seventh studio album finds them returning to Atlas Studios in Chicago with producer Matt Allison, who worked on their early recordings. Here some trumpet and the occasional synthesizer add a Neutral Milk Hotel inspired element on songs like the infectious “Dine, Dine My Darling” and “Draculina.” The opening title-track is all kinds of catchy with a punch-throwing chorus that totally makes up for Matt Skiba’s clichéd comparisons between narcotic addiction and a girl who did him wrong. Much of the album’s lyrical content is based on the negative side of relationships as well as losing loved ones to death and other complicatedly personal themes. But the simplicity in these songs’ structures nicely contrasts their entangled subject matter. Skiba went on record to say that he wanted to employ a less-is-more approach to This Addiction which reduced the amount of guitar overdubs while giving the band an album that could more easily translate to a live setting. The Deluxe Edition boasts four well-performed acoustic versions of album tracks as well as the ‘80s new-wave inspired “Kick Rocks” and the melodramatic “Those Lungs.”
Customer Reviews
Kicking this one
The band still sounds great, the tunes are solid (though I question the use of a trumpet...it sounds out of place); but they just don't have anything to say. The lyrics are my biggest problem with this one. I love Trio, don't get me wrong, but they are not the type of band who can get by on musicianship alone, they just don't have the talent; I've always considered their lyrics to be the most appealing quality and now, it sounds as though they're really stretching for a catchy line or clever verse, they just don't have it on this effort. My favorite track was the bonus song at the very end...a tounge in cheek song, no doubt, but oddly the only one sung with passion.
Keep 'Em Coming
Evolution is the name of the game. This band has evolved and grown into something amazing, as clearly shown on this album. It's not the same as their early stuff, if you want that, go listen to it. Very few bands in recent years have been able to hold their own the way Alkaline Trio has, I'm enjoying every minute of this new album. HELL YES.
Love this band
This Addiction is a great addition to an already outstanding catalog of music by Alkaline Trio. Withing the first 10 seconds I was reminded of The Trio's old work. Lots of their old "fans" try and bash their new albums. Ever since Good Mourning it's been uncool to like the Trio. I find that ridiculous. I've been with this band since before Glenn left and I can tell you they haven't lost what they had during the years of Goddammit or Maybe I'll Catch Fire. They've grown musically but always keep the key elements of what got them to where they are. Dan and Matt do an excellent job of leading the charge vocally, and Derek does a tremendous job of showing passion through his drums. This album fits perfectly in the Book that is Alkaline Trio, it's a wonderful chapter that adds to the story. Some old "fans" won't like it, but anyone that realizes if a band produces the same album 7 times knows they'll never get anywhere. For nearly 10 years this band has played a HUGE part of the soundtrack of my life, I'm so glad I have another album to add to that. To any fan who is angry that the Alkaline Trio are becoming more known, or you feel it's over produced; over produced is just a cliche way of saying they have money to spend on good quality recording. Sure the old music was fun, partially because it was so raw on quality, but it's a collection. This new album doesn't erase Godammit, nor does it erase great songs like "I Lied My Face Off" or "Goodbye Forever" it simply adds to them. The reasons to love Alkaline Trio are growing with each album. I for one really appreciate this band! I encourage anyone who's never listened to Alkaline Trio to purchase this album, as well as their older material. It's all really good.
