iTunes Review

Alkaline Trio’s seventh studio album finds them returning to Atlas Studios in Chicago with producer Matt Allison, who worked on their early recordings. Here some trumpet and the occasional synthesizer add a Neutral Milk Hotel inspired element on songs like the infectious “Dine, Dine My Darling” and “Draculina.” The opening title-track is all kinds of catchy with a punch-throwing chorus that totally makes up for Matt Skiba’s clichéd comparisons between narcotic addiction and a girl who did him wrong. Much of the album’s lyrical content is based on the negative side of relationships as well as losing loved ones to death and other complicatedly personal themes. But the simplicity in these songs’ structures nicely contrasts their entangled subject matter. Skiba went on record to say that he wanted to employ a less-is-more approach to This Addiction which reduced the amount of guitar overdubs while giving the band an album that could more easily translate to a live setting. The Deluxe Edition boasts four well-performed acoustic versions of album tracks as well as the ‘80s new-wave inspired “Kick Rocks” and the melodramatic “Those Lungs.”

Another good one

Alkaline Trio puts out another great album.
And ALL proceeds from Braintree's "Tsicavo" and "fabricate" are still going to Haiti relief.

Kicking this one

The band still sounds great, the tunes are solid (though I question the use of a trumpet...it sounds out of place); but they just don't have anything to say. The lyrics are my biggest problem with this one. I love Trio, don't get me wrong, but they are not the type of band who can get by on musicianship alone, they just don't have the talent; I've always considered their lyrics to be the most appealing quality and now, it sounds as though they're really stretching for a catchy line or clever verse, they just don't have it on this effort. My favorite track was the bonus song at the very end...a tounge in cheek song, no doubt, but oddly the only one sung with passion.

Keep 'Em Coming

Evolution is the name of the game. This band has evolved and grown into something amazing, as clearly shown on this album. It's not the same as their early stuff, if you want that, go listen to it. Very few bands in recent years have been able to hold their own the way Alkaline Trio has, I'm enjoying every minute of this new album. HELL YES.

Biography

Formed: 1997 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Formed by ex-Jerkwater and Traitors drummer Matt Skiba (vocals/guitar), Glenn Porter (drums/vocals) — formerly of 88 Fingers Louie — and Rob Doran (bass/vocals), Alkaline Trio was brought together in 1997 by heartbreak, angst, and the companionship of drinking. They issued the For Your Lungs Only EP just prior to Doran's departure in late 1997, later releasing Sundials the following year on Johann's Face Records. Slapstick's Dan Andriano entered on bass, adding a complementary voice and...
