Album Review

Judging from just the first song on This Darkened Heart, one is tempted to immediately rank All That Remains among the top tier of current Swedish-influenced American hardcore-metal bands (and there are a lot of them). The dual-guitar interplay of Oli Herbert and Mike Martin is intricate and impressive, and their classically tinged riff-writing yields at least a slight distinction from their many At the Gates-influenced contemporaries. However, as early as the second track — and again on several of the others — they reveal their downfall in attempting to incorporate passages of melodic singing. It's a downfall they share with plenty of other bands in this genre. It would be a great idea to try this technique if these bands could pull it off tastefully, but All That Remains, like many of their counterparts, do not do so. The cleanly sung breakdowns on "Focus Shall Not Fail," "Tattered on My Sleeve," and the title track feel forced and are at times cringe inducing, sounding vaguely like bad-'80s radio rock (think late Journey). The other problem is that, as the album wears on, the experienced listener can't help but get the feeling that he or she has heard many of these riffs before — if not note for note, then close enough that it doesn't make much of a difference. The guitar playing is excellent, and as a whole this album is better than average for the genre — especially by 2004's diluted standards — but it's not going to unseat Slaughter of the Soul, Storm of the Light's Bane, or any of the other classics that inspired this crowded genre in the first place.

Amazing Album

I don't get it. The iTunes review insults the clean vocals. What the hell.... First, this band was an OK semi-death metal band. Than they added clean vocals, recorded in better quality, and improved their guitars. They are now probably one of the (if not the) best metacore band out their.

Clearly the iTunes reviews are written by idiots...

Their best album, next to The Fall Of Ideals

This was the album All That Remains decided to go from mediocre Melodic Death Metal to America's best metalcore band!!! Yes, there is some growling, but Phil does everything-high scremas, regular singing, deep screams, growls, aggresion, and melody, prooving that when he tried out for Killswitch Engage, he was the better vocalist. Also, this was when Mike Martin and Jeane joined All That Remains, Song ratings: Death In My Arms ****1/2 Starts off quiet until :36. There is only vocals for like a minute or so, but don't judge. The heavy a*s guitars more than make-up for loss of vocals. The Deepest Gray **** If you wanted more singing than the last song, there is plenty in here. Heaviness and sick screams. Oli does one of his famou solos towards the end. Vicious Betrayal **** Guitars are a little different. Effects are used so you hear Phil singing along with an echo of him growling. Slightly annoying, but still a cool song. I DIe In Degrees ***1/2 This is one of the more annoying songs. The guitars aren't as heavy, and the riffs are kinda annoying at the solo. Phil's vocals are what make this song better-than-decent. Focus Shall Not Fail ****1/2 For like two minutes, its guitars that slowly get heavier. And once vocals come in, this is a fast, heavy song. Perfect, catchy chorus!!! :D Regret Not *** Instrumental song. There is heavy guitars in the middle, but the rest is acoustic :P Passion **** Chorus could have been less echo-ish, but I love the heavy breakdowns of vocals before the chorus repeats!!!! :) For Salvation ****1/2 Tons of screaming and heaviness. Catchiest chorus on here! Tattered On My Sleeve ***** Perfect amount of vocal tones and probably the heaviest song on here. Love the faded ending! This Darkened Heart ***** SLightly annoying chorus, but the fastest song on this album. The opening scream gets you pumped up!!! So, yeah. If you like metalcore or KSE, this is your band. Get ALL of their CDs, they are perfect (providing you check out Behind Silence and Solitude last. If you think the style of ATR was suckish on BSAS, well, check out Somber Eyes To The Sky by Shadows Fall. Phil was the singer of SF at the time of that CD). For this band, I reccomend: As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fal, In Flames, Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada, Threat Signal and In This Moment. Enjoy!

What?

Wonder why iTunes keeps doing this to albums. It is a great album! All That Remains Rulez D00d!
