iTunes Review

This Hungry Life is a live album, but not a conventional one. Tanya Donelly and her band did record in front of an audience (over the course of two nights in an small room at an old hotel in Vermont), but rather than perform and record a set and call it done as is the norm with most live albums, they invited the audience to witness part of the creative process as well. According to Donelly, the experience included “stops and starts, multiple takes, endless tunings, lots of sweating and a little swearing.” The experiment obviously worked because this is a stunning collection of songs with an energy and warmth that can be difficult to capture in a studio. Donelly’s vocals are as tender and emotionally charged as ever, and the nine originals showcase her strong songwriting skills. (There's also a gorgeous version of the Beatles’ White Album gem “Long Long Long.”) As a former member of such indie icons as Throwing Muses, Belly, and The Breeders, Donelly still enjoys a loyal following, and those fans should swoon over this release. For those who haven’t followed her solo career, This Hungry Life would be an excellent place to get reacquainted.

Remember Music?

I am a huge fan of Tanya Donelly. That being said.....this album was a complete surprise to me. It is brilliant. I love every song. I think it is genious that she recorded this as a live work. It is like a reminder that some people are still consumed with the passion to write and play song, and not to be splashed across tabloids. The album is beautiful. I have a huge soft spot for violins and upright bass mixed into pop music, plus I adore her work with slide guitars, and I really like how she mixes a bluegrass twist into the album. Check out Days of Grace, and New England.

Always Hungry For More

She doesn't put out anything unless it is worth a listen. Interesting concept- the entire album, with mostly new material, was recorded live.

Surprise (Again)! Her Best Solo Album Yet.

Belly's Star was a masterpiece of sorts - listen to it enough times and you can't deny that. King was a great collection of songs somehow not on the same level with Star as an overall album. Lovesongs, the solo debut, had more than it's share of moments and includes some of the highlight's of Tanya's career but is overall a little uneven. Beautysleep (for me) was a big disappointment - with the exception of a couple of tracks ("The Night You Saved My Life" being one) I just never FELT the material on that one and thought maybe that was it for good ol' Tanya. Then came the amazing, unique, haunting, out-of-nowhere Whiskey Tango Ghosts. The sound was a lot different but the BRILLIANCE was back and stronger than ever. So what did I expect from this one? Well, usually lightning doesn't strike twice in a row and I didn't think she could possibly have put together a GREAT album so soon after Whiskey (This Hungry Life was recorded just after Whiskey came out). Good maybe but not great. Boy did I underestimate her. I like this album even better than Whiskey Tango Ghosts. It has all the brilliance, cohesiveness, and depth of its predecessor but it has a lot more loud songs than soft songs and Tanya rocks the truest and hardest on those numbers she ever has in her carreer. What a great surprise This Hungry Life is. Also some of her most poignent, straightforward, effective lyrics (esp. the title track). Current Favorites: New England (being from there it makes me homesick: "It's June! And I'm still wearing my boots.....") World on Fire ("I guess for now I'll just let that one slide...") This Hungry Life ("Pick up some dust, earn someone's trust....)) Days of Grace Long Long Long But the whole thing is great and flows well as an album and on repeat as well. By the end of River Girls you're definitely still hungry for another round of "It's June!...." Nice work Tanya - you are unsurpassed!

A founding member of three of the most successful bands of the post-punk era, singer/songwriter Tanya Donelly was born July 14, 1966, in Newport, RI. At the age of 16, she and stepsister Kristin Hersh formed Throwing Muses, which in 1985 became the first American band ever signed to the influential British label 4AD; not only did the Muses' dreamy, swirling guitar sound prove highly influential on many of the alternative acts to emerge in their wake, but they also made any number of unprecedented...
