Album Review
The burgeoning southwestern United States "deathcore" scene gets another kick in the teeth from Knoxville, TN's Whitechapel with This Is Exile, their first full-length for Metal Blade. A quick glance at the cover art (razor wire, emaciated dude with a bag on his head) and the song titles ("Daemon [The Procreated]," "Messiahbolical") pretty much sums up what's inside, but Whitechapel (named for Jack the Ripper's preferred London hunting grounds) are capable of more than just eating the microphone and playing relentlessly fast — standout cuts like "Possession," the instrumental "Death Becomes Him," and the blistering title cut, the latter of which yields the album's best lyric ("The world is ours and you're totally f*****g dead"), are rarely predictable. To be sure, the "heavy, choppy chromatic riffs wrapped around an indecipherable monster voice" style that fuels the genre is well utilized, but around every corner is a sneaky melodic lead, time-signature change, or smart production trick that elevates This Is Exile above the usual death/metalcore sonic assault.

Sophmore Success
As I quickly unraveled the lyric sheet in my truck from the mall, I put the cd in and pressed play. The intro to Father of Lies somewhat disappointed my excitement, but it soon got better. The technicality going through each song is unbelievable. Where in Somatic Defilement, they were more elementary with their rhythm patterns and time signatures, they surely have evolved in This is Exile to quick double pedal grooves, fast guitar and bass riffs, and pure, technical alignment between vocals, guitar/bass, and drums in the time signatures and melodies. Phil's vocals will blow your mind away with the lyrics in EVERY song. Although there has been an evolution from a more Deathcore sound to a more Death metal sound, this album will surely have Whitechapel's old fans listening and loving, and new fans wanting more.
Brutal as all hell
Their last album was sick but this one will make you want to break windows and kill babies.
This is REAL death metal
Last album was good. But this Album took me out to lunch and punched me in the face.
