iTunes Review

From the opening primitive synth notes of the album’s foreboding instrumental intro, “First, Love,” it’s clear that She Wants Revenge are circling the dark paths of ‘80s Goth with an expert ear for recreation. It’s as if they took the criticisms of their debut album being ‘too derivative’ to heart and decided to show the world a true derivative. As the pulsing notes of the follow-up “Written in Blood” descend and Justin Warfield’s catatonic Ian Curtis / Joy Division tribute begins, it’s time to check if that’s really a 2007 copyright on this material, since this couldn’t sound closer to the turn of the 80s, Manchester, England style. Yet Warfield and Adam Bravin, the duo responsible, reside in sunny California, where it never rains or at least never approaches the misty fog that heightens this homage to British soundscapes. The beats are deliberately cheap and robotic. The vocals drip with faux British accents. The guitars shred in metallic sheets and the keyboards are fat and ominous. Yet, the songs work and She Wants Revenge seem determined to mine this sound until it’s theirs alone.

Great, Dark, Fun.

This is basically "She Wants Revenge" Pt. II, which seems to be the direction that they were shooting for in both music and supporting artwork. The boys retain pretty much the same exact feel and sound of the first album, which still seems new and fresh on its own; same heavy synthesizers and minimalist guitar plucking, mixed with neo-Jim-Morrison nightmare rants on heavy hearts and human experience. I'm primarily a hard rock lover, but these guys caught my ear with the first album and have kept it with this one. For me, its definitely like a mix of The Doors and classic '80s dark wave music. But the '80s bands didn't grab me like this does. These guys have an edge and a smart cynicism to both the lyric and the supporting cathedral rock that just pulls me in and makes me feel good about feeling bad. Synth rock purists have mentioned these guys as being commercially derivative of more classic acts - but as far as I'm concerned, if they're doing it right, it doesn't matter how they got there. This is all about the joy of feeling dark and alone, and the formula is perfect for a rainy day or a really bad mood or just getting a good scowl on your face when there's too many happy, sunny people around.

Superb!!!!

Superb!!!! Its about time some good music comes out. I love both albums, great lyrics, atmosphere, vocals, synths, Electro drums, its all great. I’m a huge fan of indie pop, darkwave -new and old and this band has hit the nail on the head once again . This will be an album I will listen to for a long, long time to come . Now if we could get rid of all the bad Mtv garbage off the air the world would be a better place.

excellent sophomoric effort

hauntingly truthful and engaging lyrics with outstanding vocals from Warfield makes this superb follow up effort a must have for audiophiles nostalgic for the tones of the 80s. this compilation is rich with strife-ridden concepts to which virtually any listener can relate. arguably as good as their debut. great work SWR!

Biography

Formed: 2003 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Los Angeles DJs Justin Warfield and Adam "Adam 12" Bravin formed the moody, Joy Division-inspired She Wants Revenge in 2003. A fortuitous combination of word of mouth, industry connections, and airplay on Sirius Satellite Radio and West Coast airwave giant KCRW provided the duo with enough exposure to snag a record deal with Geffen, resulting in a 2006 self-titled release that drew comparisons to Interpol, early Depeche Mode, and the Bravery, as well as their aforementioned eternally depressed post-punk...
