Album Review

This Is Still It distills the abundant 1980-1981 output of Athens, GA’s Method Actors, during this phase guitarist/vocalist Vic Varney (a permanent member) and drummer/vocalist David Gamble (who was out by the end of 1982). Sonic contemporaries of fellow Athenians Pylon, who were managed for a stretch by Varney, and to a slightly lesser extent the B-52's, the band was nonetheless unique for having two members and creating such a vigorous, romping, oddball attack between the instruments and voices that basslines were not missed. Several of the songs here are top-tier extrovert post-punk, neatly organized threshings as invigorating as any material from Mission of Burma or their farther-flung counterparts. Varney incorporated bass into the later material, and though those songs are neither as alien nor quite as driving as the earlier output, it is very easy to imagine them — like "Bleeding" and "Commotion" — slotted between prime B-52's and A Certain Ratio without a dip in contagious rhythmic punch. The liner notes contain an excerpt from a lengthy interview with Varney, as well as a short essay from R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, who claims to have seen the band 100 times.

Still Great

Back in the 80's a roomate of mine had some Method Actors records. They soon became one of my favorite bands, but I never saw fit to buy their records because I could listen to my roomate's. By the time we parted ways, their records were essentially unavailable. I've looked for years to no avail, so I'm absolutely delighted by this release. It contains most of their best songs. Dancing Underneath is a quirky and catchy song, remimiscent of Tom Verlaine and Television on speed. Hi Hi Whoopee is the kind of song that when you play it in your car, you find yourself driving faster. There are just too many good songs on this compilation to go into.

The Method Actors were part of the same scene that spawned the B-52's, Pylon and R.E.M. and you can tell that these bands were listening to each other because they have some shared elements.

Highly recommended

long lost now found

I was a student at the University of South Carolina from 1979 to 1983. During that time i had the pleasure of seeing the Method Actors rock every club that would let them play. I still have the vinyl of their output but by now dem grooves are worn thin. My favorites and the ones that used to get the clubs poppin were Dancing Underneath, Do the method and No condition.

Biography

Formed: Athens, GA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s

The Method Actors, a critically adored post-punk/new wave band from Athens, GA, was formed in 1979 by two members of the short-lived Tone-Tones: guitarist/vocalist Vic Varney and drummer/vocalist David Gamble. Though they gigged extensively throughout New York City in a concentrated burst a few months shortly after forming, it was back in their hometown where they were picked up by London, England’s Armageddon label, whose Peter Dyer was in town to sign Pylon, a like-minded band managed by Varney....
