Album Review

Michael Bolton gave notice of his seasonal intentions in 1992 when he included "White Christmas" on his covers album Timeless (The Classics). In 1996, he continued to forestall the necessity of following up the commercially disappointing 1993 album The One Thing (having previously delivered a hits collection in '95) by issuing a full-length Christmas album. Christmas discs tend to mix the lighthearted with the reverent, and while Bolton could certainly be solemn enough (if characteristically overwrought) to turn in an acceptable "Silent Night," his takes on holiday fare intended to emphasize the fun side of the season came off as a little intense. Demonstrating his new interest in the operatic tenor range, Bolton duetted with Placido Domingo on "Ave Maria"...and he included two newly written Christmas songs...On the whole, as Christmas albums go, This Is the Time came under the heading of "If you like Michael Bolton..." (The album was released as a "CD Extra" featuring multimedia information for computer users that included a video of Bolton performing his mournful version of "White Christmas" live, plus a sneak preview of Bolton's upcoming CD-ROM containing a discography, an excerpt of a music video of "Said I Loved You...But I Lied," a little backstage footage from a documentary, and information about Bolton's charitable foundation.)

It's Not Bad

This cd was released in 1994 and it's not all bad really. Michael did score a pop hit with the closing jazz inflected track "Love Is The Power" but I feel that song, as good and as popular as it was, really didn't belong here. I'm a bit of a purest when it comes to the cohesion of an album and he should have waited until he was ready to release another straight-ahead pop album should that track had been released. That aside this cd offered a glimpse into what Michael could do with a standard, he would re-visit the bulk of these songs on his independent release of swing arranged holiday classics but at the time of this release he was the power-pop god. He would release an album of arias a few years after this but before that he recorded "Ave Maria" as a duet with Placido Domingo and Michael would prove that next to a seasoned tenor he could hold his own. If "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" sounds like a page from the Mariah Carey songbook that's no surprise, she arranged it. This cd is formula Michael Bolton but again, it's not all bad.

Singer/songwriter Michael Bolton had an extensive (though not very successful) career under his real name, Michael Bolotin, before emerging in the mid-'80s as a major soft rock balladeer. He first turned up on RCA Records in the mid-'70s, singing cover tunes and his own blue-eyed soul songs in a gruff, Joe Cocker-like voice. Neither record buyers nor critics were much interested by the result. He then became the lead singer of Blackjack, a heavy metal band that made two albums for Polydor before...
