iTunes Review
Contrary to all the love showered on the Kinks, they were never as successful in the United States as their legend suggests. Their finest albums from the ‘60s sold poorly upon first release. However, their influence on fellow artists was massive and it has often been the covers of their material by others that have kept Ray Davies and the Kinks in the spotlight. This tribute contains a fair share of satisfying interpretations. None of the obvious covers are here. No Van Halen doing “You Really Got Me,” or the Jam punking out “David Watts.” Instead, fresh covers. Fountains of Wayne were born to play “Better Things.” Jonathan Richman is perfect for the ache of “Stop Your Sobbing” (though the Pretenders own the finest version). Cracker sound like they make their living covering Kinks songs with their artistically true cover of “Victoria.” Matthew Sweet knows “Big Sky” inside and out. Ron Sexsmith, an obvious heir to Davies’ songwriting tradition, understands the beauty of “This Is Where I Belong.” Blur’s Damon Albarn joins Davies for a sensitive cover of “Waterloo Sunset,” one of Davies’ most beloved songs.
Customer Reviews
Its really good to hear these songs rockin out again!! God save & God bless the Kinks!
There's some great stuff here! Ray & Dave's influences live on today in so much of what we hear, it's nice to hear these versions. A great homage to the band, takes you back in ways to the last time you saw the band live.
Great Tribute Album
There have been it seems so many tribute albums in the last few years that it is really refreshing to listen to one that captures the spirit of the artist being honored without seeming to be either a soundalike band or perhaps worse, a hastily thrown together group of artists that end up covering the material merely because the record company releasing the tribute album is hoping to either expose unknown bands or have well known artists' fans buy the tribute album. I am a huge Kinks fan, but I almost liked some of these covers ( "Muswell Hillbilly", "Art Lover" and "Starstruck" in particular) almost more than the originals, as heretical as that might sound.
This is where I belong
If you are a Kinks fan and appreciate Ray, you will enjoy this album. I usually don't like these but this a keeper
