Sander K Does it Again
Sander Kleinenberg is one of the very few DJ's out there who gets it. Walking on the tightrope of excellence, Kleinenberg brings two, equally-present driving forces to bear on his sets: an unparalleled artistic vision rooted in the lush soundscapes of deep-bass 80s sounds, coupled with a detached ambivalent humor that reminds the listener not to take the serious affair of music too seriously. The result is a perfect blend. The Muses inspire the feet to move and the heart is lifted. Finding one quality or the other in a DJ's approach isn't too difficult, but finding both is quite rare, especially in the soulless blips-and-bleeps dominated phase of house we currently find ourselves in. "This is..." is a welcome effort and a solid buy. While I find Sander's "This is Everybody!" and "This is Everyobody Too!" to be two of the greatest compilations ever put out (and I am a DJ with quite an extensive collection of music), the present effort is a solid piece that maintains Sander as one of the best. I have appreciated inclusion of more live-sounding percussion on the past mixes that seems to be missing here- a characteristic of the current electro-house craze- but the deep rocking base, refreshing balance of humor and sincerity, and subtle eighties nods makes this one a great investment and a gem among lusterless pebbles.
Seamless & Well Placed
Sander's most recent album appears to be a collection of current trends and melodies apparent in most of today's chart-topping EPs (that is, mostly electro and tech-house), but don't let that fool you. True to Sander's nature and perspective on what makes a universal DJ, the mix relies on some well crafted transitions and killer hooks to make it unique and engaging listen after listen. Telling a story, a primary focus for any DJ, is a goal surely achieved with each disc - although slightly more straightforwardly so in disc two. Some songs are rocking house grooves that pull the listener in because they are so simple and mesmerizing (Tucan on disc two), while others rely on the more progressive sound that big-room DJs are known for (Quivver's super-hot Dancing In Dark Rooms). The entire feel of disc one is a bit more eclectic and esoteric than disc two; when I saw Sander live most recently he played a lot of the tracks on disc two to much fanfare and dance. I think disc one has given Sander a chance to flex his collection and demonstrate how varied his tastes are; while the tracks are all hypnotic and evolved, they aren't necessarily big room beats. Overall the two-disc series is a nice way of testing the waters for a lot of what the dance scene is at its current state. Synthesizers are at the forefront of most of these tracks and sparse vocals entertain on about a third of the seletions. Consistent beat is varied with break beat or thoroughly electrified tracks to keep attention and maintain intrigue. While not nearly as house like as Sander's "This Is Everybody Too" series, the set is a welcome addition to Sander's lineup of mix CDs and worthy of his well respected and much revered title.
This is...
OK< Sander Kleinenberg is most definately the #1 House DJ in the world. Why? Everyone dances at his shows. He is a freak for getting the crowd jumping up and down, he is also a nice guy and doesnt have a big ego like the other "big timers" out there...he does it because he loves the music. So, with that being said, go out and by Renaissance CD 1 & 2. It will blow your socks off, and you have never heard anything so smooth and fun if you love house music. I LOVE SANDER, and this album is good, but he is better than this. Let me say it again, if you are a Sander Freak like me you bought this one, but Renaissance is pure platinum...
