Brooke breathes a new soul and emotion into a Guthrie standard
No one has taken the lyrics of Guthrie and given them new life the way Jonatha Brooke has done (see her CD "The Works.") She breathes new melody into his words with new arrangements and music and takes words never given the opportunity of music and resurrects them, and you know somewhere Woody Guthrie is smiling down on her wishing they had shared a train ride or a bottle of wine while he roamed this good earth...
Ethereal version of a classic
Saw Jonatha play this tonight at the Allen Room at Lincoln Center as part of a celebration of Woody Guthrie music. Jonatha puts her own unique spin on a classic song and creates a haunting and ethereal version.

Song starts as an interesting derivative of the original w/JB on kalimba. Just as preview ends, she takes it into a new place with some of her amazing, signature sadness. Give it a try. Saw her do this at her performance of The Works yesterday, the day it was released. Moving.
