Incredible debut!
I could not believe this was a debut album. It does not sound like it in the slightest - it sounds like a seasoned band at the apex of their career. Each song will become your favorite depending on your mood. the august takes the best of a few different genres and blends them together into something totally new - something that just feels right. This album isn't an experimental album - you won't find yourself thinking "wow, they took music in a whole different direction", you'll just wonder why this isn't how music has always sounded, because it's just so natural, so right. Do not let this album pass you by!
Not hiding where they've been
This isn't a challenging album, and that's not a bad thing. Good popular music should give its listener something to relate to and should make sure you have the chorus stuck in your head the next day. With 10 of 12 songs about love (this could just about be a love concept album), they have the "give the listener something to relate to" part covered. Songs paint around the common themes of want, get, lose, want - the orbits we all draw around different people in our lives, and it works to a pretty cohesive effect overall. The songs never feel overwrought, but are a wide step beyond bubblegum "baby baby" simplicity. The compositions are straightforward, and yeah, catchy. This is a release probably best filed in the "new country" bin at your local record store - they do still have those, right? - but this album relies much more on solid songwriting and understated arrangements than the majority of slicked-up production common in that genre. Recommended.
Expect the unexpected
Although categorized under the genre country, don't be mislead. This excellent album covers many genres and is full of delights and surprises. At first the strong vocal performance catches your attention, but after listening for a while, you hear outstanding harmonies and instruments played beautifully. The tunes are catchy and the lyrics heartfelt. What a delightful find that will please many. Highly recommended for all music lovers.
