Classic "Blue" Blues
An excellent collection of 20's and 30's bawdy blues by blues and jazz heavyweights demonstrating the role of this genre as the kind of good time party music that outraged and terrified racists and the self-righteous. A blend of rural (Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Willie McTell, Memphis Jug Band) and urban (Chocolate Dandies, Oscar's Chicago Swingers) acoustic performers ranging from solo guitarists (the brilliant Lonnie Johnson) and pianists (Tampa Red) to small jazz combos. Recording quality reflects the age of recordings from this era, which is bothersome to some, but which only enhances the fun and enjoyment for most. An excellent historical collection that is equally strong for the quality of the performances. Clever, fun risque songwriting demonstrating the earliest examples of the art of the double--and single--entendre. Many highlights, including a slower version of McTell's "Southern Can" with Curly Weaver (acoustic guitar afficionados should check out his excellent, more manic 12-string version elsewhere), and Sippie Wallace in her prime (who would re-emerge on Women Be Wise, a duet with Bonnie Raitt, roughly 60 years later in the 90s). Great value as well ($8 for 20 songs).
Fun, fun music
I bought this entire album as background music for my office. The tracks are short and tinny (very old music obviously), but that quality adds to the coolness factor. I also play this entire track at low volume in my 3 month old's crib and he seems to really enjoy the music (ie. it puts him to sleep).
Great music if you have a little diner or antique shop or something like that. The price is right too. For about the price of a six pack.
