Album Review
Deep in their prime period, the Crusaders reaffirm their affinity with the groove and rely entirely upon all six of their funky selves for their material. "My Mama Told Me So" and "Feeling Funky" contain the most infectious outcropping of the groove, while "Spiral" is OK, yet just a bit too frantic for the groove to thrive. "And Then There Was the Blues" is a laid-back, mildly funky jog at quite some length, where everyone gets a chance to solo extensively; essentially this is the old Jazz Crusaders frontline sound with a funky underbelly. "Til the Sun Shines" is an urbane Larry Carlton ballad with synthesized strings, quite different and to the point, but "Serenity" is a bore, a nothing idea stretched out for too long. The Crusaders' groove machine is still very much in gear, but the fuel is occasionally diluted. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

The Crusaders/Spiral
The song SPIRAL may be the best .99 cents you spend in your whole life. Larry Carlton's guitar work is perfection. The night I heard this song transformed me from your basic 70's rock fan into a voracious jazz rock fusion carnivore. This is truley a rare track where everyone gets to show thier stuff without the song becomming a collection of players trying to out shine each other. This song was the bridge to a whole new world. Get off your wallet! Buy this song!!!
A "Crusader" for this music
All, As far back as I can remember, say the early 70's, I can remember the Crusaders sound on the radio at home and in the car. This is one of the Crusaders finest LP's of that era. The reviewer from AMG is entitled to his opinion but he was clearly on "Crack" when he reviewed this LP. Spiral is one of those tunes that defined the Crusaders sound. Lastly, I love Larry Carlton's music but don't forget that the original Crusaders are Joe, Wilton, Wayne and Stix. I noticed that fact gets lost in the shuffle at times when reviewing these talented cats from Houston, TX. Peace and enjoy the music. DSpree
And The There Was The Blues....
....should've been available for $.99 download, because in my opinion it is the best song on this great album. The above reviewer is right, AMG really crapped on this album by giving it only 3 stars.
