Album Review

Thought So... is a bit of a travelogue for Nightmares on Wax, consisting of tracks recorded in locales ranging from Leeds to Ibiza — and definitely many places in between. Utilizing an intriguing studio named Camper Van Somewhere (as in, "Recorded on the..."), George Evelyn and Robin Taylor-Firth keep their productions painfully sparse, par for the course in the NoW catalog. Sometimes they're a little too sparse, specifically the first few tracks, where listeners might get the feeling they're trapped back in 1996 — when a naked breakbeat and an occasional effect or sample were the only things necessary for an innovative production. By the time they get to "Bringin It," however, it's clear that Evelyn and Taylor-Firth haven't lost their touch for finding grooves that transcend terms like lazy and instead achieve superlatives like effortless. There are a few additional moments of greatness ("Moretime" is a clear highlight), but also a few more tracks on the opposite side — they may make for great background listening, but seem to require altered states to get through while focusing on the music.

Opinions

DJDEVIN, opinions are like DJs. Too many and not enough good ones. This is classic NOW. I'll buy the album from you.

Dope on Wax

This a fabulous album to play loud in your car as you roll through town. Very repetitive, yes. Highloghts include 195 lbs, the super chill Calling, and Moretime is oh so funky :) Not up to par with Inna Space, or Carboot, but worth a relaxing drive day or night...

E.A.S.E. great trip hop DJ but this is a bit different

N.O.W has never been disappointing using great samples, mellow lines and great dub and hip hop beats over the years. This new project thought so is a bit different for DJ E.A.S.E. As opposed to some of his past work which was very reggae and hip hop inspired, this has a more soul feel and for the first time since I can recall very vocal heavy on his part. I have to admit this is very well orchestrated and thought out. You can here a lot of the soulful disco and funk inspired tracks among the reggae dub and trip hop typically found in his music. With the exception of the intro (which is weak but easily skipped) the rest of the tracks deserve a listen to. The first two full tracks, Da Feelin' and 195lbs, are so strong the both were put on loop on my ipod. Da Feelin' is definitely disco inspired and would fir in at any disco across the US or even for that matter would be perfect for any Studio 54 party. I love the reggae feel of 195lbs and the distorted vocal is off the hook. The stand out track for me is Hey Ego! This is by far an amazing dub track with an incredible sample. Probably one of his best to date. I highly recommend this to any dub head or club head who wants to feel neo soul, trip hop, disco, or reggae. This is far from disappointing from one of the greatest DJ's on the planet right now.

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Yorkshire, England

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

The combined project of George Evelyn and Robin Taylor-Firth, Nightmares on Wax became one of the brightest spots on the post-rave British techno map of the early '90s. NoW's debut album, A Word of Science, was — along with early tracks by LFO, Tuff Little Unit, and Tricky Disco — a crucial bridge between the competing influences of New York house and electro, Detroit techno and soul, London rave and acid, and the burgeoning eclecticism of the years to come.
