Album Review

On 2003's Berlinette, Ellen Allien reveled in the stops and starts, in pinching her already-precision percussion stabs into tetchy bunches of sharp black commas and apostrophes. It made for music that was futuristic, excitingly tense, and, well, totally German. Allien's back after an EP and a remix album with the sleeker but no less fun Thrills. It's more concise than Berlinette, beginning with the insistent layering and chopped reverb guitar of "Come," a track that's Berlin's ultimate answer to Achtung Baby if there ever was one. And it continues. The churning "Your Body Is My Body," "Ghost Train"'s gentle clockwise cascade, and "Naked Rain"'s brittle, almost synth pop feel — these are songs that move feet and stroke chins. Allien is a world-class DJ, so the dancing part is no surprise. But blending those consistent beats with synthetic detachment and left-field moments? Thrills puts "experimental" and "techno" on balance.

Inexorably Glacial, Perfectly Frigid

Glacially, Thrills moves inexorably across the electronic landscape, with it's icy beats and melodies as ethereal as ice-reflected light. Purely, tectonically, forceful in message, Thrills embodies both a universal ferocity, as well as a concentrated Amazon-like power that is, joyously, an integral part of Allien’s production and creates an album that is wonderfully, compellingly, angry (a great example of this is Washing Machine Is Speaking, which delivers an attitude which is furiously noir, while maintaining the extreme frigidity that is Ellen’s hallmark). From a technical standpoint, Thrills is just about perfect: every second of music is perfect in it’s timing and production, every song embodies Allien’s mastery over her music. The vocals, too, express Thrill’s minimal, yet perfect sound: they are more of a beat-like accompaniment than as vocals, acting as a purely electric, driving, threads in the musical weave. While close to perfect, Thrills is a far from clinical album: most of the songs feature a deliciously dirty aspect (Cloudy City and Washing Machine Is Speaking in particular embody this gritty ambiance) that heightens the inexorability of the album to a new, and powerful height. Key Tracks: Washing Machine Is Speaking, Down, The Brain Is Lost, Come

Let's not be condescending, now!

To that reviewer: There are many people here in the States who know good music. I would say that most of the Ellen Allien fans just get their music elsewhere, like vinyl shops or her own website. As for this album, I like it very much. Great sounds. And she is pretty good on the tables, for anyone who has a chance to see her live.

The most wonderfully FRIGID music you'll ever hear.

I was introduced to Ellen Allien's music with Berlinette (another great Ellen record along with Stratkind), but for me, Thrills just hit the spot. With this album, Ellen has created some really frigid and edgy electro. Specifically, I would say that the sounds on Ellen's Thrills fall somewhere in between Swayzak's smooth, ambient lounge electro and The Hacker's dark, gothic-inspired electro. Thrills is great because it can work anywhere, whether its bumping from a car stereo or thumping down a Dior runway. My favorite tracks on this album include: The Brain Is Lost (wait for the synthbass hook to start up) Your Body Is My Body (this song unbelieveably catchy and frigid, and is also my personal fav) Naked Rain (reminds me more of Ellen's Berlinette sound) Magma (the Modeselektor remix of this song is crazy)

Biography

Born: Germany

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin's Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien's immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the '90s, she hosted programs on Berlin's Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated...
