iTunes Review
Through Songs I Was First Undone draws upon material from outside the Christian music world to reveal God’s presence in unlikely places. McRoberts unites his diverse batch of material with an acoustic-centered sound while paying close attention to the meaning of the lyrics. He probes the emotional wounds of Aimee Mann’s “Save Me,” finds the empathetic core within Howard Jones’ “No One Is To Blame,” and turns the Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” into a dreamy, hymn-like cry of longing. McRoberts stretches out vocally, delivering a particularly intense performance on a vigorous reworking of the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The desolate tone of Tom Waits’ “Georgia Lee” and Trent Reznor’s “Head Like A Hole” is balanced by the warmth of George Michael’s “Freedom 90” and Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers.” McRoberts treats these tunes with respect while bringing something personal to each interpretation. Both on musical and spiritual levels, this is an engaging album that commends itself to Christian and secular listeners alike.

Work of Art
Justin McRoberts continues to amaze his fans. Over the years, we’ve seen McRoberts’ music mature. As he uses all cover songs on this project, it takes on a different feel than his other work; a refined, distinguished feel, while his voice and style remain familiar. What I love most about this album is the way he has used his creative and artistic abilities to take work that was already well done and, somehow (maybe magically), make such work even better. From the sultry sounds of "Stripped" to the turn-it-up-loud refrain in "Freedom 90," this is an album that captures what all music listeners want: the familiarity of those songs we hold dear in a style that is unique. (Let's face it, he covers Aimee Mann's "Save Me" in a way no one else could.) A quick look at the song titles and original artists and you will not be able to deny that McRoberts has excellent taste in music. After one listen, you won’t be able to deny that his musical abilities are proven by and through this choice of songs. Reading the reasons behind specific song selections on his blog has aided me in appreciating even more his artistry. On this album, McRoberts grabs his brush to paint a picture of songs that have shaped his life. McRoberts does on "Through Songs I Was First Undone" what others attempt to do with covers; taking something beautiful and adding a twist. He sets himself apart by reconstructing the songs; making them his own while still paying homage to the originals. Seems that this album would be best described by this quote: “Sounds and words and thoughts that were someone else's creation find lodging in your chest. Music speaks of universal things. Common experience. That's why your lungs swell and your eyes close and you force as much air as possible through your vocal chords whenever you encounter a song that expresses what is your life." - David Crowder Good luck keeping your foot from tapping throughout this beautiful work.
Stop me, oh, stop me...
Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before. On his newest record, Justin covers songs that I've listened to for over 20 years (Depeche Mode, The Smiths, NIN, Howard Jones). A very eclectic group of songs that seems to chronicle a musical journey of sorts. The record is still very Justin-y. If you like his other albums, I definitely recommend this one (even if you don't like the original songs). But why don't you like the original songs? I mean, come on... What's wrong with you?

This collection of songs is a treasure for music lovers as well as those who might not recognize all the tracks. Justin's collection of songs will suprise you, inspire you and introduce you to a broad spectrum of musical gems. Standout tracks are "Save Me", "Head Like A Hole", "No One To Blame" and "Please, Please, Please". Thank you Justin for sharing your inspiration with your fans.
