Album Review

Even Lubbock, TX — a college town in the middle of nowhere best known for the alt-country likes of Terry Allen and the Flatlanders — had to get its very own sludgy black metal act eventually. The Dead See get points for their punny name, but after that, there is unfortunately little originality to be found on Through the Veil. Check the song titles: "Dead Man's Throne," "Kingdom of S**t" and "Traversing the Mountain of Knives" all sound like Death Metal 101 rejects. Similarly, Mark Key's gruff (but happily Cookie Monster-free) vocals and his unison guitar riffs with Neil Barrett are merely adequate, with little to differentiate them from most of the dozens of similar bands in the metal underground. There's nothing actively wrong with Through the Veil, but only the most die-hard fan of the doom metal style is going to be particularly taken by it.

Bias much?

The album reviewer really didn't feel like writing a review with an open mind, and apparently has some sort of disdain for heavy music coming out of texas? (Attends TTU in Lubbock) So to offset this, I will throw in my two cents. This band is nothing extraordinary, but nevertheless has the talent and ability to create a thoroughly enjoyable album. "Sons of Silence" and "Cronos" are my favorites of the record. Although "The Dead See" don't mess around with alternative styles or setups, this album is pretty much one punishing set after another. Some would say that makes "The Dead See" inflexible and unskilled, I just see it as good focus of design.

There is a ton of good metal coming out of Texas lately and this is one of the most recent examples. They do sound a little like Mastodon, but more doomy and less proggy. The more I listen, the more I like it. The only thing I don't like about this album is the samples, but they are easy to overlook because the quality of the songs are allowed to shine through. Give it a go!!!!

40 minutes of doomy, groovy, sludgy grit metal

With slow, brooding riffs, these guys claw and grapple through 40 minutes of doomy, groovy, sludgy grit metal. It's not too technical, instead the band goes for power over finesse. The production is slightly noisy which adds a nice jagged edge to an already rough mix of sounds. This disc does everything right. It's beyond heavy, it's super loud, it's mega brutal, and it's even catchy.
