Genius, Virtually Ignored
I began listening to Split Enz in the 80's because my younger brother was playing some of the catchy tunes on Waiata. Although I liked them, I didn't take them entirely seriously as a band at the time. I am fortunate though that I was there to listen to this album, Time and Tide as well as Conflicting Emotions at the times of there release. I still love these albums thirty years later. Split Enz was a quirky, sometimes odd, but always wonderful band that could generate both catchy pop tunes as well as darkly intelligent rock music. They were unique and very, very special. Unfortunately here in the US this band and these albums have been virtually ignored. For example, these albums are just now coming to iTunes. Neil Finn is widely recognized by critics as a songwriter but his legacy is essentially unknown to the American music-buying public. That is a great shame.
I agree with the reviewer that Time and Tide is probably the pinnacle of Split Enz output. It achieves this without a large number of popular tracks. Time and Tide is their most consistent album start to finish. Their quirkiness and command of melody is on full display throughout, especially in 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' and 'Never Ceases to Amaze Me'. There are also catchy pop\rock masterpieces such as "Hello Sandy Allen', 'Small World'. 'Haul Away\Log Cabin Fever' would strike anyone as very odd on first listening but its dark genius eventually reveals itself with a stirring, positive message. What really stands out about Time and Tide is the craftsmanship that went into this album. These aren't just songs. These are sonic constructions created within the framework of a song. This album is a true masterpiece!
Amazing
I've been searching for this album for years. Had it when I lived in NZ in 82-86, but could not find in the US. Every song is a brilliant and showcases Neil Finn's brilliance.
Aotearoa: Rockin' Individuals!
I just about wore this tape out in high school on my walkman (kids: that's what existed before iPods & before portable CD players). I can't agree with James Fischer more: this is a vastly under rated album & is Split Enz's pinnacle achievement. Maybe it's just because I work on ships, but I've always loved Split Enzs' salty references. 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' is an all time favorite of mine. If you like New Wave or Art Rock, this album is for you!
