iTunes Review
The ‘songwriter’s songwriter,’ Canadian troubadour Ron Sexsmith has been lauded by Paul McCartney, Elton John, Elvis Costello and other top shelf artists for crisp, economical songs that are long on melody and perspective. He's reunited with producer Mitchell Froom, who handled the duties on three of Sexsmith’s earlier acclaimed albums (the self-titled major label debut, Other Songs and Whereabouts), and the duo immediately set in comfortably with a near-minimalist approach. Opening cut “Hands of Time” confronts mortality with a joyful push, while “Snow Angel” casts Sexsmith into the Brian Wilson role, his voice trailing upwards for the spine-chilling chorus. Every Sexsmith album follows this familiar schematic of hymn-like ballads and reverent mid-tempos, his politeness offering a conciliatory tone throughout. The stories tucked inside are often small and unassuming, but here Sexsmith thinks a little larger, addressing Canada’s neutral state in world affairs as a potential harbinger for looming disaster (“Ship of Fools”) and questioning how karma affects those called to do the dirty jobs (“The Grim Trucker”). The album closes with “And Now the Day is Done,” yet another spare and affecting ballad where a subtle sadness haunts the dimming of the day.

New Ron Sexsmith Fan
I discovered Mr. Sexsmith just recently on NPR. His music is very infectious. It wins you over with a silk punch. Lyrics are top notch and the instrumentation is strong. Sexsmith's voice can take some time getting used to as it is unpolished and wanders off key frequently. It adds authenticity to the songs, though, and I quickly got used to his vocal inflections after two listenings of the album. His unique vocals actually add a lot of authenticity to the songs. Standouts include the first four cuts: Hands of Time, Snow Angel, All In Good Time, and Never Give Up. Jazz at the Bookstore and Some Dusty Things are very strong and finish off the rest of the album that can be hit and miss. Ship of Fools and Grim Trucker seem out-of-place on here...using more upbeat tempos and some studio tricks. Even with these two missteps, in my opinion, what Sexsmith offers up is a very chill, straightforward collection of expertly crafted rock tunes. And I stress expertly crafted. Enjoy the album.
yes, it's not an ordinary voice...
but I've always seen it as a strength. It's supple and unique. (Roy Orbison wasn't initially praised as a wonderful singer.) Mr. Sexsmith is the modern king of melody but his oft-melancholy stance is not for everyone. (His live performances prove that he is quite the rocker.) There are gems in his canon that will stand for all time and this album adds to his outstanding body of work.
A MUST BUY
I Don't know why Ron Sexsmith is not a household name with the kind of music he creates. This album is another reason to love Ron. With tracks like some dusty things, and cold hearted wind, he showcases classic Ron S. Grim Trucker and Jazz at the bookstore are both a treat, but not a surprising one. Ron's music continually gets more alluring as you listen. The more you get, the more you want.
