Jeff Lynne & Co's BEST work EVER
Wow! I remember this album coming out when I was in high school. It blew me away then and still does today. Jeff Lynne does justice in paying homage to his own musical idols and this work is a masterpiece. You can hear ELO give a nod to The Beatles and Roy Orbison in particular. It's no wonder that Lynne would go on to work with some of his heroes in just a few years following this album. He was in tune with his muse during this period.
Each original track (1 thru 13) is just so cool especially the standouts Twilight, Ticket to the Moon, and Hold on Tight. I recall that back in Las Vegas, Twilight and Hold on Tight got a fair amount of radio airplay but the album never seemed to go as far as something like Discovery. I like the 50's Orbison sounding The Way Life's Meant to Be with all the La La La's and vibraslap and echoing harmonies. Sooo doo wop.
I got to see ELO in concert at the old Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas and really enjoyed the show. Some of my friends were disappointed but I was loving every minute of it.
Buy this album. Put on the phones and be transported to a future past. There's something for everybody on this gem.
Jeff Lynne is an artist and even though the term genius is overused in this generation, the word definitely applies to him. This album ROCKS!
Great album which portends the computer age
I remember hearing this album as a small child and loving it. It is strange to hear ELO's vision of a computerized society in this album from the early eighties, especially when we now live in a world of computerized convenience. Kind of like an Orwell novel meets broadway minus the fatalism. Jeff Lynne has a great voice and the songs are catchy. A must have for ELO fans and fans of music.
Why isn't ELO as famous as it should be?
I don't understand why ELO isn't more famous. They're like a mixture of Queen, The Beatles, and the Talking Heads. They're so goood! I don't know anything about them but I LOVE them.
