Album Review

When Stars of Track and Field lost their original bassist, the band opted to move forward without him, using digital effects and electronic trickery to make up for the absence. The result was Centuries Before Love and War, an album that reinforced the band's songwriting with samples, analog loops, and various computerized sounds. Released nearly three years later, A Time for Lions finds the group still functioning sans bass, although the electronic elements that made Centuries so unique are gone. Instead, this is a streamlined rock record, filled with sweeping anthems tailor-made to bait new listeners. "End of All Time" features a falsetto-filled melody worthy of Chris Martin, and lead-off track "Racing Lights" is filled with fine, summery hooks. The album's ballads don't fare quite as well, but A Time for Lions trains its focus on faster numbers, essentially serving as the arena rock foil to Centuries' intimate, bedroom sound.

Only time will tell...

Having been blown-away upon first hearing Centuries I am somewhat disappointed with this follow-up. Gone are the amazing vocal harmonies, or if they're there you can't hear cause they are buried under tons of production. No more electro beeps and blips and abstract lyrics. Just a bunch of overproduced guitar and schmaltzy "I'm-trying-to-get-me-some" lyrics. Blah. This is the sound of a band evolving in their sound but progressing to a more 'commercial acceptable' sound. Whereas Centuries was refreshing in that it took some pop commonalities and peppered them with some form of uniqueness, this new release sounds like everything else on the radio, guess they're just trying to become the next big thing and you can hear that on this attempt. Kind of how alt became mainstream in the early 90's, these Indie bands are just churning out the same garble that's popping up everywhere. Is it good? Well, it's okay but if you close your eyes you just might think you're listening to the next Snow Patrol album.

You actually CAN judge this by its cover...

I've never listened to this band before, but saw they were named after a Belle and Sebastian song and between that, the album art, and 30 second samples, I decided to go for the purchase. Amazing stuff. I then proceeded to by all their albums on iTunes and have listened to them all 3 times and counting... You won't be dissapointed in buying these.

If only I could have discovered you guys sooner...

Holy jeez... I actually like this band, and now days it is rare for me to find good new music. But this? This is GREAT new music. If you haven't heard any of this stuff you are seriously missing out. I'm gonna go listen to some more of this band now...
