Album Review

Guitarist Mike Stern's music has often been a little difficult to classify, featuring strong improvisations, the sound and power of rock, and elements of funk, R&B and sometimes pop. For his second recording as a leader, Stern is joined by either Bob Berg or Michael Brecker on tenor, keyboardist Jim Beard, electric bassist Jeff Andrews, drummer Peter Erskine and percussionist Don Alias; Don Grolnick sits in on organ during "No Notice." The music (seven Stern originals) ranges from the rhythmic to the more sophisticated and features plenty of the leader's high-powered guitar.

How in the world is this POP?!

Man, if you think this is in the Pop genre then you just don't have a clue about one of the best jazz fusion guitarists of the modern era. Stern is an absolute master of subtlety, but the man can shred too. This is a fantastic CD and a great intro into his solo music for those who haven't had the chance to hear him. And the other reviewer is correct, if you have the chance to hear him live take it.

Wonderful Guitarist!

The only thing better than hearing a Mike Stern CD is seeing him jam in person!! Fabulous Album!

Fab Fusion

Hard to believe it's been 23 years since my wife bought "Time In Place" (on cassette) for me right after it was released. This album, along with John Scofield's "Still Warm", was a huge influence on my development as a musician. The guitar work is great, of course, but the sax playing by Bill Berg (RIP) and Michael Brecker are also fantastic, and the rhythm section gives a master class on getting into and out of a lot of different grooves. Overall just a great album.
