A debut release to write home about. Ghost Ghost delivers with "Time is Gravity"
Time is Gravity, the debut EP from Ghost Ghost, showcases their unique marriage of guitar-driven garage rock with frenetic dance-inspired drumming, intelligently dark lyrics, and haunting, dissonant vocal harmonies. Indie rock addicts will notice a heavy Built to Spill influence, with a few non-linear touches that testify to a strong Animal Collective + Oneida influence. Critics with a literary bent will also discover references to Kurt Vonnegut, Wallace Stevens, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and JD Salinger scattered throughout the thickly dystopian landscape of surprising and challenging lyrics about loss, alienation, (love), and despair. Ghost Ghost first garnered attention and recognition early on when former MTV veejay and host of "120 Minutes," Matt Pinfield discovered them at a venue in the Lower East Side, playing "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" the first track on the Time is Gravity EP. Ghost Ghost is Karl Ward on electric guitar and vocals, Kevin Peckham on bass guitar and vocals, and Tim Ireland on drums. Ward's guitar work is notoriously ambitious and surprising with harmonies and counter-harmonies vying for control in every measure. Ireland's drumming is fierce and energetic while Peckham's melodic base runs complete the trio's signature amalgam of melody and structural tension. Well worthy of repeated listens, the Time is Gravity EP announces Ghost Ghost's arrival as a vital presence on the NYC rock scene for years to come.
The sound of young music
Noisy, driving but not unsophisticated rock by, of and for those who find the world a cacophonous, confusing and somewhat frustrating place. Try out the title track if you're reading "Godel, Escher, Bach" over a double-shot vente in Starbucks, but 'Cadmium Red' is the best track.
New sounds with classic New Wave echoes
I'm hugely impressed with this debut from a New York band. I'm a sucker for muscular bass, brooding keyboards and slashing guitar topped by literate, cutting lyrics. Listening to tracks like Time Is Gravity and Cadmium Red I hear echoes of the British bands The Comsat Angels and The Sound. Like these bands, Ghost Ghost combine great musicianship and strong songwriting into an exciting whole.
