iTunes Review
Gillian Welch and songwriting partner David Rawlings have developed and refined their own blend of country, folk, and bluegrass on this release. It’s the most austere and personal of her three albums to date and the one with the least instrumental variety. Most of the songs are performed on two acoustic guitars with Rawlings adding his melodic guitar lines and sublime close harmony singing (he also produced the album). The songs are complex and lyrically rich and deal with themes that revolve around the nature of time and its effect on subjects ranging from love to art as in the dreamy Roy Orbinson-esque “Dear Someone,” the front porch bluegrass of “My First Lover” and “Red Clay Halo,” and the epic bookends of “Revelator” and the 14-minute “I Dream a Highway.” Filled with subtle power and grace, Time - The Revelator is a deeply moving work and arguably the duo’s definitive artistic statement.
Customer Reviews
Something with substance in a world of garbage produced by Record companies.
This is where we once again get to see the true poets of music that come from real talent. Its nice to get to hear new and fresh real talent in a world of spoon feed puppets of the record companies greed. Gilian Welch was an awe inspiring person to watch perform live. You can see her true heart felt soul in her music and performance. She believes in this music as if it where her roots. Many may not realize her claim to fame or what rocketed her career was the soundtrack on the movie "Oh Brother were out thou". Which is a shame because she deserves all of this credit to purely her natural talent alone. This albums tracks like "Revelator" & "First time Lover" that make you rock back in forth in your chair to the beat of that picking banjo. This is soul music for those muddy waters of the south and a time long lost. Enjoy this album its well worth it. I suggest you see her perform when you get the chance and you will truly see the artist in her. This album makes this ethinic "minority" (that title given to me always makes me laugh) of latin desent want to slap his knee and start picking on a banjo.
Phenomenal
This acoustic album is perfectly paced - slow and wistful but with direction and a very full, acoustic sound. I highly recommend it if you are looking for calm but solid music.
Great Album
I bought the CD for the title track and was pleseantly suprised by the rest of it as well. A great Album all around. Its not very often that you buy a CD these days and get your moneys worth.
