Album Review

Still a sensation in his homeland of Japan, Toshi Kubota — who has now dropped his last name, most likely to eliminate some preconceived notions — continued to chase success in the U.S. with Time to Share, an album that boasts help from fans Angie Stone, Mos Def, and Native Tongues member Ali Shaheed Muhammad (producer of A Tribe Called Quest, D'Angelo, Ice Cube). It's been four years since his last domestic release, the accomplished Nothing but Your Love, but it's doubtful that the results — no chart hits, some light video rotation — will be any different this time out. Time to Share is another fine album, but the mainstream R&B acts continue to get younger and younger; the material is too mature and laid-back to appeal to more than attentive contemporary R&B fans in their late twenties and thirties. And that's not a knock on the artist.

Soulful, funky AND refined.

I discovered Toshi by accident while searching the net for Toshi Reagon whom I had seen on a television show. I don't know how I missed knowing about Toshinobu Kubota for the past 20 years - because he has had a long and successful career (go find the Japanese releases -- his latest one For Real? released 2006 is SO GOOD! I have been listening to it nonstop for two weeks now.) I think his Japanese releases are a little bit better but he is original, funky and soulful and incredibly creative in any language ... try to look up some clips of his performances on YouTube to see how dynamic he is live. Protean is the best word I have read describing him. I think he would have a huge broad appeal in the US if people knew about him and would really like to see him perform live. Some of his songs grip you right away like "Breaking Through" but other ones take a listen or two before you connect. OK I admit that a few tunes on this recording are a bit overproduced - but go back and find his other stuff - esp. For Real and As One and United Flow (japanese releases).

Great Artist

Toshi is a great artist. It's true that his music might not have the mainstream appeal that the younger acts have, but I'm hoping that with the recent rise in popularity of artists such as John Legend, Toshi can gain some momentum. Listen to "Breaking Through" on this album. It's a great song, and it gives you a flavor of what Toshi is about.

Super-cool! An extremely talented artist~

I started listening to Toshi Kubota because, well, if you're a fan of Japanese pop music at *all*, you have to know who he is! He pretty much started the R&B revolution in Japan. He's worked with many famous artists here in America (Tony! Toni! Tone! and Angie Stone, to drop some names). In Japan, his music has been covered by tons of the next-gen R&B artists that succeed him. His American albums are awesome; this one especially! Check out "Shadows of Your Love," it's beautiful multi-layered harmony is sure to impress. "Hope You'll Be Well" is a sweet song with a positive message. "Breaking Through" borrows riffs from Curtis Mayfield's "Tripping Out" if I recall correctly. Toshi's music may have never made it mainstream, but anyone who appreciates smooth and thoughtful R&B should definitely have this album in their collection.
